Skidding winch

great replies, im learning, sounds like the steepness would be a major factor and thickness but with a skidsteer it doesnt take much room at 6ft wide max to get around, i also use steel tracks and they do a pretty good job of a billy goat, sounds like it would be hard to even get a skidder winch in some of those places goodness!!! thanks for sharing oh and 4570 man about that winch on your trailer, mine is portable, i welded a receiver tube on the front of my trailer 25 bucks from TSC, with some old scrap i had laying around, i use jumper cables or a spare battery for power, welded a piece of flat steel i got from the metal by the foot store for 25 bucks to the male receiver i got for 20 bucks at TSC drilled and bolded the winch to it, got a 8000lb winch with a snatch block for 300 bucks heck its like butter for anything i have used it for plus i can move the winch to other things as needed. ive got less than 400 bucks in the whole rig and its portable, i can slide it in the receiver on my SS bucket/forks or on the receiver on my tractor hitch, its a great way to make one useful on several pieces of equip/applications

Right. These are common forests out here. Not much room between trees.

Would definitely be low production work for some guys but it would spee things up for me. Right now Its either dragging trees out with the quad to an area where I can block them up or just simply blocking them up where they lay and hauling them out in the quad trailer.

Are you saying instead of mechanically or physically engaging the idler pulley to create the winching, have tension on the belts all the time and have something to mechanically disengage the winching. If so the problem I could see in that would be if the disengaging mechanism failed there would be no way of stopping the winch in an emergency except to disengage the tractor pto.
Unless I am misunderstanding you

Using a quad. I built this for pulling some small logs, works well. It also folds down and a flat bed is put on to make it a dump trailer. The apex of the arch connects to the upright and is pinned.

To those that can't really see the use of a logging winch, on this terrain it's quit nice to have a winch.
