Yup, this concoction works, our dog was full on blasted in the face two weeks ago and this worked. I suddenly had to go get a chainsaw part so I didn't get to watch my wife do the dirty job. Darn.

Peroxide is the key from what I was told by a chemist. It is what really neutralizes the odor chemicals quickly. Something about an oxidation reaction, dunno. So the recipes above are probably spot on. Good luck.

To protect yourself enough to stand to be in there, you need more than a dust mask. You need a full rubber face piece respirator with carbon cartridges. This is a chemical, not a dust. Probably more than you want to spend, but you can get something at a home depot or Sherwin williams for paint spraying that will work fine. You just need cartridges (for chemicals), not just filters (for particles).

Skunk Odor Removal - How to Get Rid of Skunk Smell
Here is the secret recipe that WORKS. Mix the following:
1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 teaspoon liquid soap or dish detergent
Mix these together and bathe ("shampoo" in or rub down) the spray victim thoroughly.
Be sure to use this mixture immediately after it is created, as it is unstable.
Let sit for five minutes and rinse with tap water afterward, and repeat if necessary.

What Ford said. Works extremely well and effectively.

The one time my dog got sprayed - so strong it smelled sweet - I washed him with Dawn dish soap. Once a day for three days. By the third day he was wise to this and it was a real battle but both of us got a good bath. I don't know if it was because I smelled from wrestling with the dog or the Dawn did the trick but at the end of the third day he was allowed in the house. I darn near wasn't.

Our old dog got sprayed and we used the above recipe and it worked. Except for about 6 weeks we would get an occasional "whiff" when he got wet. And I must have got something in the sinus cavity because every once and awhile that smell appeared. We were lucky in that we knew he got sprayed and could take care of it outside. A woman I worked with was not so fortunate. A dog will try to rub that oil musk off on anything handy...like the sofa, the carpeting...

When I moved out to the country 28 years ago I had a few skunks living in the work shop pole barn no doors type of thing. I could see there tails sticking out from under the work bench and they snore .I was so supersized the air compressor and the radio did not run them off or worse. Every morning I would push the tails back under out of sight with a jack handle so I did not step on them. With time they would come out and beg for some of my dinner, there is a fine line between beg and bully after awhile. Then they had babies, never thought a few bites of a sandwich could lead to so much fun. When I would have company in the shop and the skunks would come out to beg I would wispier to my company (do not move and maybe they will not see you, do not try to run) I would wait till they almost passed out and then I would feed the skunks in the far end of the building. Everybody has seen them and do not care anymore. If I lay down in the yard, more there level in height they will come up to me for attention and of coarse food . About the only time I have any spraying is in the spring when they breed, other then that no problems. They do have a Oder like a burnt electric motor when they are right up on you. DSCF0411.JPGDSCF0413.JPG No I do not have a dog.

I think I would have caught them up and had them de-odorized if they wanted to continue living there. I think lots of folks use de-odored skunks as house pets similar to a cat in habits.

I have a suspicion that water helps "set" the scent.

I have found the peroxide concoction works better if you don't wet the dog first, apply "straight". It will lighten the color of dark fur, my tricolor Aussie has red highlights at the moment.

The other thing that works for us Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover. It's an enzyme based product. It is not a shampoo, it is meant to be used straight from the bottle as is.

The real fun is when the dog comes bounding in the dog door to share his joy at having encountered and dispatched one that snuck under the fence at 2am, by jumping on your bed and rolling on you through the covers. I had to toss the comforter, and because skunks are assumed rabid until proven otherwise in my state, he got a nice little 45 day house arrest out of it...even after the carcass tested "clean" and a booster. Apparently the state does not wish to take chances with rabies, and frankly, I'm OK with that. It did mean we couldn't take a vacation this summer because we could not board him.

Could have been worse, a friend had one spray outside the bedroom window, into her fan. Her, the bed, 2 dogs, 2 cats.

Myth busters had an episode on this a few years back. They used tomato juice, hydrogen peroxide, a commercial skunk odor remover, and a feminine hygiene product.

If I remember correctly the feminine hygiene product came out on top, with the tomato juice down at the bottom.

We have a number of skunks around and fortunately our dog is a house dog and has not had the misfortune of dealing with one.

For the most part I leave them alone, but this spring we had one coming up to the house during the early evening hours and acting a little out of the ordinary. With the high probability it may have had rabies I set out a 220 connie and had him the first night.

For those wondering it did let loose a little of his essence but not a full out spray. The smell was pretty much gone by the next morning when I went to release him from the trap. I made sure not to touch him, just in case my suspicion was correct. Took him out to the back forty and gave him a proper burial.
