Seems 2 of our dogs got too close to a skunk. Don't have any tomato juice. I've read an old thread here about some home concoctions but I don't have any Scope and I just also happen to be out of Dawn.

Enter "Gojo"

Wife washed her hands with it (after petting dog) and her hands smell just fine now.

We're wondering if we can maybe use that to bathe the dogs and cut the skunk smell?

She's concerned about being toxic to the dogs. the contents on the bottle say :

Water, Pumice, d-limonene, vegetable Oil or Dipentene, Linear Alcohol Alkoxylate, Aloe Extract, Baby Oil, Carbomer, Jojoba Oil, Lanolin Oil, Methychlorisothiazolinone Methylisothiazolinone, Tocopheryl Acetate, Triethanolamine.

geez, how do people come up with these names, much less stop & think "Hey George.. let's mix some of these 22 syllable words together & call it Gojo"

Anyways, any thoughts to toxicity to a dog?

gojo web page

Down load the MSDS for the product you have. I would think if it is safe for humans it probably is for dogs as well.

Interestingly enough, that's what I told my wife. I found a bit of dawn in garage and we made the concoction posted here using dawn, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide.

Don't know if it worked, because I think in the end, the dogs weren't skunked per se'. They DID smell like a skunk, but I think they just poked their nose somewhere, perhaps where a skunk HAD skunked, and got some on their nose.

Now that all has calmed down a bit, we gave them both a bath in that concoction, bathed them again in regular dog suds and thus far, all seems well.

We use a product called "Skunkoff" that works well. We have a couple bottles standing by, so pick it up now before you need it next time. I think we had to buy it online last time because we couldn't find it in the store. It's kind of pricey. Nothing will completely remove the odor. We usually lock her outside for a day or so to air out unless it's too cold. Then we put her crate in the basement and leave her down there overnight.

I wouldn't use any home brews on your dog without asking the vet. We had a dog that had an allergic reaction to some kind of witches brew we came up with. Unpleaseant for the dog and our pocketbook.

Glad everything worked out for you. From the sounds of it I think you were right... your dog didn't actually get sprayed.
I had never heard of using Gojo and since you brought it up, I think I will do an inquiry about it. The big thing is to use something to cut the oil and not spread it around, that's why the grease cutting dish soap in the mixture you mentioned.
After a couple good baths I put fabric softener on the dog, too. I use Downy Clean Breeze 'cause I like the smell. let it sit for 10 minutes or so, make sure the dog doesn't lick it and then rinse it off well. Just in case there's a next time, but hopefully not. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif It never hurts to put a drop of mineral oil in the dog's eyes too, for protection against the soaps.

Mark....... Skunkoff is sold in independent pet shops usually. There is also a good skunk odor remover made by Natures Miracle also sold in pet shops. Many of the mass merchandisers don't carry the products because of cost. Junk..

I have never had a dog "skunked" in more that 40 years of having dogs, so I can't comment on the Scope. Hopefully I will never have to experience how well it works. Around here, it is the porcupines that are the problem. Like the large snapping turtle that used to come into the back yard to lay its eggs, both are relocated to another part of town where there are no residences for them to become a nuisance again. My vet said that the best remedy for a porcupine is a 12 gauge. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Though skunks are one of our three "shoot on sight" creatures, we now and then get a dog sprayed but good! Face it, though we love goldens they ain't the brightest!

A chemist friend of ours forwarded a chemical composition of eau d' pepe along with an explanation of what substances would counteract it. It just so happened that concoction already existed. Massengill Douche!

We've tried it (after using shampoo to get the worst of the oily residue off) and doggone it works!

Of course the local clerk is still talking about that strange man who bought gallons of the stuff after explaining, "It's for my dog!"
