Skunked dog, what might help?

( I have never had a dog "skunked" in more that 40 years of having dogs, so I can't comment on the Scope. Hopefully I will never have to experience how well it works. Around here, it is the porcupines that are the problem. Like the large snapping turtle that used to come into the back yard to lay its eggs, both are relocated to another part of town where there are no residences for them to become a nuisance again. My vet said that the best remedy for a porcupine is a 12 gauge. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif )

Junkman -- If you ever get a dog quilled again here's a neat trick for removing them without causing a lot of pain. Cut them off about half an inch from the dog's skin. Take a piece of guaze soaked in vinegar and place it over the cut quills. The quills are hollow; the vinegar runs down the shaft and turns them soft. After 5-10 minutes the little barbs on the outside of the quills are soft enough to bend back when you pull them out.

Do you have a trick to get the dog to stay still????? The last 2 times the dog had to be anesthetized and after the last time, the vet suggested that I find another animal hospital if it happened again. That was over 10 years ago, so hopefully he will have forgotten if the Weimeraner ever decides to go after one. Both this Weimeraner and the past German Shorthair Pointer seem to recognize the danger and only corner them and bark till I come to the rescue. I will say that it is next to impossible to kill a porcupine by hitting it with a shovel. They run faster than I can and it was quite a site, me swinging the shovel and just hitting the ground. I believe that the last one I scared away by those actions.... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Wow, I never thought of that problem! Goldens are so social they just sort of flop into my lap when they get hurt with a "Fix it, Dad!" look in their eyes.
