In OZ we call them slashers but I think you guys call them brush hogs. Then again we don't call our grass "brush" so that may explain that one !!

Anyway, it doesn't have any chains under the front or rear to stop rocks flying out etc. I am getting some put on, after having a makeshift rubber guard on for a while.

I got real safety conscious today after reading some of the other posts and it got the better of me.

Any suggestions on the type of chain, spacings of chain etc.??

Cheers

Neil, I think it depends to some extent on the size of your slasher and how heavy duty it is. I used 5/16" chain, 1" spacing (which makes the links just about touch together), but I've seen bigger machines with 3/8" chain.

Neil -

If you've read some of the other posts, you may have already seen these pictures of the chain guards on my 5' rotary cutter. These were store bought and made for the cutter. Maybe you can glean some size and spacing info from the pictures.

Harv,

Thanks for the photos. Yes that's given me some ideas. Mine is only a toy compared to that one, but still fires those rocks out !!!

I looked at chain guards Saturday on a Rhino shreader. Around here, Rhino is the toughest shreader you can buy. What looked good is the way the chain attached. The plate steel had oblong slots that the end link would fit through. A rod slid down through the chain ends to hold them in place. It looks to me like the best idea ever for attaching the chain. Look closely at the pictures by Harv and you will see what I mean. Perhaps all a re done this way. I just never looked before. Spend some time a a tractor dealer and check out the ways the chain is attached.

We don't have chains on our 15' Rhino, nad have broken out two rear wondows on a JD 4440. Chains probably cost less than JD tempered tinted windows.

Finally got my chains fitted to the slasher. Picking it up this afternoon.

Got real heavy chain too. Was also real expensive but a lot cheaper than losing an eye/arm/leg or worse.

Will send photo soon.

Neil,

What brand and size slasher do you have?

What are some popular makes down there?

Mine is a 4' slasher. Made by Bundaberg Machinery (Another regional Queensland town).

Many other makes around, but a lot of which are made by smaller firms.

Even though Bundaberg is some 300km from Rockhampton, we see a lot of their slashers around here.

I doubt we have many "name" brands around here that you guys know of. We have 18million people, you must have oodles more than that so it is a supply & demand thing.

How many people in the US?

I recently heard about 285 million U.S. people {other estimates up to 300 million}...

I just purchased a 7' slasher...{rotary cutter}... the size and weight {1375 lbs.} of it would scare the brush and nasty stuff to jump out of it's way... /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

300 million. Makes 18million seem like a picnic.

7' slasher - Wow that is big - Weight is even bigger.

My chains are attached. Makes slasher much heavier now and front wheels lift easy when slasher raised.

Had any luck with front wheel weights or tyre filling etc?
