Slingshots, now and then??

Marbles for ammo. I don't know about you rich folks; I just had to hunt around for small rocks, stones, or pieces of gravel for ammo.

Bird,
Thats what I would use also, small rocks. Every once and a while I could find ball bearings in my dads shop...man they were deadly.

My dad always used Dogwood trees, find the perfect forks and tie them to hold the shape and bake them in the oven. Used inner-tubes until we found the electric linemans gloves. The long gloves that go up to the elbow. Cut them into strips and you have a great set of sling-shot rubbers.

My dad always carried a sling-shot in his back pocket and was a very good shot. I was not to bad myself. Still have several sling-shots now that we still use. Now when people see the old tree fork type they want to know how much we would charge to make them a pair, but they had to understand dad was very serious about his sling-shots and was always looking for the perfect forks. No Dogwood tree was safe and I can remember mom getting mad because dad would trim her Dogwoods just for the sling-shot prongs /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Wallyworld sells slingshots. I bought a folding one there a while back, and I think they might even have the original Wrist Rocket....or a knock-off at least.

I use mine to encourage the deer to find lunch elsewhere than my trees, bushes, flowers and vegetables.

Rich? Ha! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I remember the poorest kid in Denton had the biggest sack of marbles. He wouldn't play unless you would play "keepsees." The guy was murder. Nuthin' within 25' was safe. I've never seen anyone who could shoot a marble like this guy. I believe it was the YMCA that sponsored a marbles tournament every year and it was just understood that this kid would take first place. The only contest was for 2nd on down. By the time he graduated from high school (if he ever did) he must have had a couple of tow sacks full of marbles. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

What happened? Did you throw your wristrocket out with the leisure suit? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I grew up on slingshots too - My grandfather used to make them out of mountain laurel, inner tube, and shoe tongues. I used small and large rocks too until I finally got a wrist rocket for Christmas - then I started scavenging for every ball bearing I could find.

I actually bought a newer model a few years ago that was similar to the original - however, I still prefer to use the original - and you can still find new rubbers to boot!!! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I guess I will never grow up /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I'm not sure that a sling shot would just make a coon mad - however, a .22 cal pellet rifle with a scope can be deadly and quiet -

I am having a difficult time finding the hunting pellets (pointed) in .22 cal - seems all I can find locally are the flat nosed ones.

Good Luck -

I would stand at the top of the driveway and deplete the limestone used in the my dads budget landscaping. Main target was stray cats. The challenge was predicting the path the oblong ammo would take.

My influence then was two older brothers, My boy might need somebody else as an instigator. hehehehe

1Bush2Hog:

I faintly remember the leisure suit. If I remember correctly, it was 65-35 and if you perspired in it you were stinky all day. Sort of like one of those weight reduction suits.

I think I am older than you realize. I had a pair of Beatle Boots in Junior High School. Pressed cardboard heels and all. Sweet on dry pavement but in the rain......look out. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think I have a couple pair of Farah Bell Bottom drawers in the closet, that is, if the moths haven't eaten them. Destined for FleaBay. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes, I did have a wrist rocket and now it's time for another.

This whole thread has been fun reading. I guess we all had a slingshot or air rifle when we were kids. Kids today have Game Boy's, and computers. Maybe that's better. I don't have to worry about my windows. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Egon:

I've heard said "you are only as old as you feel". By Friday I feel older than dirt.

If you're still looking for hunting pellets, you might look at these two types from Cabelas:
Polymer Pointed Pellets or these Saboted Pellets

I've got some saboted pellets, not the Cabelas ones, and they really move out at high speed.
