I need help with advice. I am in the planning stages of prepping my land for grass seed. I have read the different post here on TBN. There is one common thing that I have seen, it is to protect your equipment and tractor. What is the best way to protect your tiller and tractor ? I do not see a shear bolt on the tiller. Is there one way better than another way ? I want to get the best protection for the the tractor and tiller. Is an over running coupler better than a slip clutch ? Where is the best place to buy either ? What would the cost be ? What is the best size ? I have a NH TC 24 tractor.

Thank you for any and all help.

Alan,
If you can't locate a shear bolt on the tiller and you want protection, go for the slip clutch. I really don't think an over running clutch will do you any good in this case.

Alan I have seen slip clutches at TSC but I don't remember the price on them. I have one on my KingKutter tiller and it works well when I encounter a large stone.

ALL CCM Gear Drive tillers come with a clutch. An over running coupler is needed only when cutters are used. Many of the newer tractors have the over-run protection built into the PTO systems, likely your TC24 have it built into it. The over-run coupler only protects the tractor from the transference of the inertia of the implement to the tractor via the PTO.

A slip clutch at TSC runs around $95.

Do slip clutches come in different sizes or is it one size fits all ? Does any of the TBNers sell slip clutches ?

Thanks again,

I think that there is defintely some type of system on the tiller. Is it belt drive?

Art, I think it is chain driven. The rototiller is an Yanmar model # 1503. I think it is a grey market tiller.

Ron, Thank you for the help. Can you tell me what the part number should be. I can not tell what would be the correct slip clutch. Seems a little confusing to me, to many choices.

This is the PTO clutch that they have listed in their cataloge.

32323 EA 18 1356242SLIP CLUTCH W/1 3/8SMF M X1 3/8SMOOTH FE $62.49

To order you will have to call. If you have the shaft size they should be able to fit a clutch to your tiller.

If you get a clutch make sure that shaft is not to long. Your tractor and tiller can be damaged by PTO shaft being to long.

Here is a link on problems with a PTO Shaft that is to long. Click Here
