Yanmar FX24D replaced with Massey GC2400
Well, here in So MD we have the first snow of the season that needed to be plowed. Got out the trusty FX24D from the barn & tried to go around to the leanto where the implements are stored. Noticed that the tractor was sliding and slipping. Took the bushhog off and tried to pull up to the rear blade. NOPE! Wasn't going to let me get back into the leanto with the rear lighter. Finally got the blade on and proceeded to clear the driveway. Got stuck several times and had to use the FEL to work my way out a couple of times. Tractor is sitting in front of the open door of the barn now, not able to make it up the apron to get inside.

Tractor has the Bridgestone Diamond treads and truck tires on the front. In this wet slippery snow there just isn't enough traction. Don't want to use chains because only get plowable snow @ 1 time per year.

So, you are saying you are done for this year (1 snow) and don't have to worry about it until next year? Can you just store the tractor with the rear blade on it, rather than with the rotary cutter, which will save you the switch. Maybe add some weight to the rear blade as I suspect you don't want to take the FEL off.
Sorry you don't get more snow than this per year. We are almost that bad, but have had the plow our for an inch or two a total of three times this year. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

How much snow did you get? I used to live in MD--grew up there.

We got @ 6" down here near Prince Frederick. I finally got the tractor back into the barn, then parked it. Guess I'll wait till tomorrow to help the neighbors.

Was rough cutting just a couple of weeks ago, so didn't want to have the blade on in case needed the mower again.

I had some fun today too. Too bad I only got around 4" of snow though. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Still was much fun with my baby tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Your going to have a cold seat. Looks like someone left the out house door open in your uphill picture. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

That's my red headed step child 4 wheeler. I haven't been using it much lately. The tractor has been getting the most usage lately. I'm surprise how it goes thru 2 ft of snow. I know I should have got 4wd but 2wd seems to work good enough for now. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've plowed snow three times this season here in western MD. This last snow we got about 4-5". I was out there at 7:30 am plowing the drive with my YM1301D and a 42" front blade. I still have the rice tires on and have absolutely no problems in the snow. And you are right - this was a wet snow.

For those that will be doing any snow removal with their tractors, I would highly recommend keeping the rice tires for winter, and using the turf/diamond/truck treads for lawn service only. I plan to have 265-75/16 tires mounted on my existing rims, and getting another set of wheels for the rice tires.

I second Greg's comments re: the rice tires. In Jan. 2000 we had a 17" snow down here & tractor acted completely differently with the rice tires and Ags on the front. Course the tractor's been changed dramatically with the FEL, FEL mount (lowers ground clearance) and FEL changes weight distribution as well as theless aggressive tires since 1/2000.

There is definate drive shaft wind up when I go on concrete. It seems much more severe than when I first mounted tires. Sitting here reading what I just wrote the culprit is probably the increased weight on the front tires with the FEL. I think there is less front tire slippage because of FEL weight

That is part of it, but I would say that a great deal of the noticeable wind up is due to the turf tires on front instead of the ag tires. Those turfs put more rubber to the road than the ag tires.

Don, have you tried using maximum air pressure in the front tires? I suspect since you mounted the loader, your front tires are sitting flatter on the ground, thereby reducing your rolling circumference. Remember pi(d), or in this case pi(3.14) x (radiusx2), with diameter being twice the distance from hub center to ground, which can vary greatly with tire pressure.

Don,
I also have a quick attach loader for my YM1301D which leaves a significant loader frame and hydraulic valves on the tractor. I used the loader once to clear the driveway, and didn't like it. I have it off right now, and have the blade on the front. I only wish the blade was wider - 42" is just barely wide enough to clear the width of the tractor when I angle it. I attached a photo of the tractor in which you can see the frame. Unfortunately, I don't have a photo with the blade on.

Mark, does your setup do a decent job of moving the snow around? I have a Yanmar 140D w/turf tires and was thinking about getting a King Kutter rear mount blade to clear my gravel driveway. Is not having any down force on the TPH an issue? Thanks, Jim
