After trying to lift out lots of star pickets with the drawbar on my L175, and 1 real stubborn one, my hydraulics won't lift my slasher up to its full height anymore.

I assumed there to be a bypass valve so that if you tried to lift something too heavy, it wouldn't stuff up the hydraulics. This didn't seem to happen and now I have a problem. I swear it now makes more noise than it used to in the hydraulics too.

Any ideas??????

njirqs,
Did you notice a burning smell, also when first useing the lift {setting cold for a while}it makes no differents in the operation.

There are number of things to look for.
Fluid level,filter,weak pump,maybe a vent plug.
I would try changing the fluid and filter first could be water mix in there.
I'm interested in your out come.

Is the problem that it won't lift to full height, or that it lifts too slowly, or both?

Thomas,

It smells OK but In wondered if I had overheated the oil, therefore should change it. I suspect something more sinister than that !!

I won't lift to full height anymore. Speed of lift seems OK but only goes up to about halfway. I think without the weight of the slasher it lifts full height. So I suspect something is slipping in there due to the stress I put it under.

Is there a bypass valve like I thought, or does something bust when a too heavy load is lifted ?

hjrqs, I'll have to admit I really don't know. I'm assuming you checked the oil and it is not low. If it looks clean and smells normal (not burned), it should be all right. There is, of course, a pressure relief valve, and if you pull the lever all the way back and the 3-point does not lift beyond a certain point because the relief valve is opening, you should be able to hear it. And I also assume that your tractor has an adjustment as mine does to adjust the height at which it stops, but I would think if that were out of adjustment it would stop there whether you had a load on it or not. I guess about all I can do is wish you luck and hope it isn't anything serious.

njrqs,
Sounds like you have a seal etc which needs replacing, which may cause the loud noise plus unable to lift do to the lack of fluid...hope I'm wrong!!
I don't believe you done much damage do to the set relief pressure.

Have you try looking at your hitch as you raise upwards to see if anything catching or bent.

Thomas & Bird

Thanks again. When I get motivated, maybe tomorrow, I'll try and check all the symptoms. Take the slasher off etc. and see what happens. Will also look at the oil too.

Hope it just goes away but somehow don't think so.

Will post again re this soon !

Cheers

I'd concur with Bird. I think there are basically 3 possible problems.

1) Some mechanical obstruction is inhibiting the lift. This seems unlikely unless you bent or otherwise damaged something with your work. Visual inspection and observing the lift without attachments should let you sort out if this is the problem.

2) Control malfunction. One of the control rods for the list could have been be bent while doing your work. If the lift works OK without a load, then it's not the controls.

3) Internal hydraulic problem. Too me, this sounds most likely. I could easily see how a blown seal would slow lifting and make it difficult for the lift to go full height under load (because fluid is bypassing the seal rather than developing full pressure against the cyl). If it lifts without load, but struggles under load, then I think this is what you are up against.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

To all....

Yes without a load the lift goes full height, but even with a light load it only goes about 1/3 the way up. Can't hear any expensive type noises.

Any ideas on how to fix the seal. Sounds expensive !

Cheers
