Re: Red Flags

Well, we could vote for 'red flags' or the way it is. I like both (obviously).

Well, I got it working again, very, very slowly with frequent long pauses, sometimes a full minute or longer.

Well, we'll look into this some more.

To give you some idea of the speed problem, on this site I can't tell any difference between my 28.8 connection at home and this T1 line at my office. Here on our T1 line I waited 45 seconds after clicking on the "discussions" link, and finally had to hit stop. All phases do run very slow.

I'm not paying anything for enjoying your site, so I can't complain; however, the old site was much faster.

Well, for one, if you're having a speed problem, please record the time you're having the problem, and your connection at the time of the problem, so we can further correct this problem.

The last screen I pulled up took something between 90 and 150 seconds. I had to leave the room for a minute.

Just so you know I do not have any problem. I use a modem connection with microsoft network internet access. Everything works fine. these message pages take a few seconds to load up not bad.

Hi Bird,

Sometimes the speed of access is affected by factors other than the particular site you are visiting. Larger loads come on after 3 pm (school's out!) and also very large e-mail loads start around 4:30 pm and go till an hour or so later, as business people get end of day messages out.

At home, I really can't use my dialup ISP at all. It is very much like your experience, taking 1-2 minutes to change each page. This is the problem of a crummy ISP, and the only one I have available, since I live way out in the country.

You can go to the website listed below, and it will measure your exact line speed and access speed. It also shows it on a scale in comparison to other types of access. You should go there and measure your "general" access speed, not specifically on this forum.

I am not having any problems with TBN at work (cable modem), but can't hardly access it from home (dial up) at all.

Here's the bandwidth test website:

I dropped off the Internet, shut down and restarted my computer, logged back onto the Internet, and at 2:47 p.m. (CDT), I tried to log onto this forum. After 3 full minutes, I entered the URL again, and after another 2 full minutes, I entered the URL the 3rd time, and the main index popped up after another 15 seconds. I clicked on the Feedback section, and after 2 full minutes, I entered the URL again, and the messages appeared 60 seconds later. I then clicked on the "Show All" and after 2 full minutes, I clicked on "Stop", then entered the URL again, and after 55 seconds, I entered the URL again, and the messages popped up in another 40 seconds. I'm running Windows 98, Second Edition (ver. 4.10.2222A) and Internet Explorer (ver. 5.00.2919.6307), with the screen resolution set to 800x600.

At the time I sent the last message, I showed to be connected at 26400 bps, which is the norm for my ISP and location. The speed test you suggested showed 17.2 kbps and 2.1 K bytes/sec. And I know my ISP and phone company aren't the best in the country by a long shot, but other sites are working normally.

Try emptying your temporary internet files.

I tried "Delete Files" from the Internet Options of the Tools menu. Couldn't tell it made much difference; perhaps a little. So, I just went back to the desktop and dumped ALL the cookies from the Temporary Internet Files. Maybe it helped, but still slower'n molasses on a cold morning.

Muhammad,
Have you checked the air and fuel filters. They really slow things down when they are clogged. Mine is running fine and has been from the start.

Well, both filters are brand new, how could they be bad?? I think we might have to continue this one in one of the 'Owning' topics! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Muhammad, You may have hit on something there, after all. It's working much better today. The problem (or at least my complaints) have not been so much the speed as the fact that I get long pauses when the indication is that transmissions have paused, both directions, and my ISP has been trying to convince me that the problem is "noise" on the phone lines. Now that might make sense, except for the fact that only some sites were being affected. Of course, I've admitted in the past to not knowing much about computers, and while I use Windows' disk cleanup regularly, I've never deleted any of the cookies. I guess time will tell, but everything seems to be working better today. Thanks for your help.
