That has been thought about also, a new engine.
We put a predator on a 1980's troy-built horse about 4 years ago. No complaints. The original tecumseh gave up the ghost

Picture of it without the air cleaner installed. I was watching the throttle to see if the governor was working.

My friend got his tiller today and used it. Ran good. Before he left we drained the gear oil. That is without a doubt the worst looking fluid I have ever seen come out a machine. Apparently the gear box has bronze gears and you are suppose to use a gear oil that isn’t multi viscosity, it can hurt the gears. Of course the manual is over 40 years old and with some research it’s not any more clear what should be used. Maybe a GL4 gear oil is best?

You have a fuel flow issue and most likely have maple syrup in the carb again. Ethanol fuel content makes it even worse. 82 was pre-ethanol, so rubber seal, hoses and o-rings may have dissolved.
