The 45 Colt's history goes back to 1873. Co-introduced in 1873 with Colt's Single Action Army revolver, this along with the 45-70 is perhaps one of the most successful centerfire chamberings dating from the first years of self contained cartridges.
The 45 ACP also mentioned in this thread was adopted by the US Ordinance Department in 1911, six years after its introduction by John M. Browning. Like the 45 Colt's popularity and long following in revolvers the 45 ACP is one of the all time favorites in automatic pistols.
