Smoke irritating my lungs - how much smoke is normal?

I've seen a lot of old tractors with the exhaust going underneath and out the back like a car.
Doing a good job of that would be less than selling yours and buying new.

I suppose the 1700D was used before you got it, thus the money pit slogan.

From your words, smokes cranking from idle to full throttle, and under 2K-rpm under use it smokes, I would assume that the piston rings need changing or the injectors need cleaning (or replaced).

In the warm summer I'll get a few good smoke sessions bush hogging, but temps under 75, nothing at all. I did have one issue with bad diesel from an off the path fueling station once. I've stopped going there and the smoke never came back.

Haha, yeah, it was well-used when I bought it. I have replaced all 4 tires, radiator, hoses, battery, cables, starter solenoid, belt and more. I had a hard time finding a tractor so jumped on this one when it came available. The only reason I was able to buy it was because the guy before me backed out. The guy had over 30 calls and I bought it the day it came onto Craigslist. I paid $3300. It came with a blade and it has a front loader. Hard to find a comparable 4x4 diesel tractor for that. You can't around here. It runs really well, though.

I do want to pull the head off and take a look at everything this year. I hope I have the time this summer. I am thinking a valve job and maybe some rings or something. I just want to see the cylinders. I am sure I can fix it.

"Quarts per hour" is excessive. Motor needs attention.

Unless your exhaust is in the normal vertical position there is not much you can do about it. It should exit above your head and smoke rises.

If height of the stack are a concern for garage doors, could you get a temporary slip pipe made at a local muffler shop to raise it? I know my brother has an extension he likes on his 4020 when he is baling. Pops it off for barn cleaning.
I also hate the concentrated fumes at start up indoors but don't notice it outside and working.

I have shared in the past that my tractor smokes a bit. I get both the typical black diesel smoke (unburned fuel) but also a slight burning oil smell. The engine has no problem starting so I feel the compression is fine, and it runs really well. That said, I ran it for several hours yesterday and felt a bit wheezy afterwards. I am concerned about my health. I think I will wear a respirator next time I use it, but am wondering how much smoke is normal? When I run at 2k rpm's or so, there is barely a hint, but if I crank up the throttle really hard from idle it smokes more, or if I put it under a really heavy load.
Which way is your muffler pointed? Does it go straight up? If so put a angle off to the side and shoot it off to your right. If it points straight ahead turn it 90 degrees to point off to the right side. Or you can turn the whole muffler 90 degrees and point the exhaust toward the ground. If you have it in any of these directions already then I guess I am of no help with my suggestions. I personally like the smell of hints of diesel exhaust. NOw with oil burning in it and some 2 strokes really bother me and get my eyes burning if bad.

The air filter is almost brand new. I know it's burning oil, but I also get black smoke at times and that alone can irritate my respiratory system as well. I am going to track just how much oil it is using (quarts per hour). I'd like to figure out what is causing that.

if your talking quarts of oil per hour than you do have a problem and now might be a good time to address that esp since it bothers you. Maybe just re ring it and see what you get, if the walls look ok. Now if your talking a quart in 10 hours I don't call that bad. but if were talking a quart in just a couple hours that's a lot

To my recollection, most visible diesel smoke comes on start up, but not running at working speeds. So, it sounds like your machine is "burning oil". It may need some mechanical attention..........or it's just burning oil. Better get that respirator on. :2cents:

When working heavy and under a heavy load it will visibly smoke as well.

I thought about this for an extreme condition for him. Turn that muffler like I said 90 degrees cut some off the top or would be the front of the pipe and then use flex pipe to run back on it self and under the axle out the back.

I could have worded it better. It's not using more than a quart per hour, I just want to log how MANY hours it takes to use a single quart, since all I have is an hours meter.
