I posted under the engine speed of a YM1700, but haven't got an answer. My question is, I ran my tractor at 1800 and pto 2nd and cut for about a half hour, and it worked great, and even on a hill of probably around 20, it never slowed down or seems to labor in anyway. But after I got it cut, and I speeded up, to full speed to move to another place it let out some white smoke for probably a minute or two, then went clear again. What was that? Unburned fuel, will it hurt anything when it does that?

Doesn't seem like the engine is lugging, but the white smoke is usually water in the fuel due to (water in the tank, head gasket, etc.) Or did it happen just one time??

It has been my experience that white smoke means you are burning water.

White smoke while cold = incomplete burn of fuel of cold combustion temps.

White smoke while hot = typically water...

I would check the cooling system as the other guys mentioned.

Everyone seems to be missing what I was saying. It only did it the one time, after running it at a lower speed, cutting grass, with the bush hog. I've had it 3 years and it doesn't have any kind of smoke, the rest of the time. It's about like a old VW, that I use to have, by looking at the tail pipe, you didn't know if it was running or not. The tractor is the same way, you see nothing, unless the sun hits it just right, then you see just a very little bit. So I'm sure its not water.

Dick,

Are you sure it was white smoke. I say this because you brought up the sun thing. If I am mowing along a tree line (in shade) and my 1700 lugs a little; the smoke looks white. If I am mowing out in the middle of the pasture (in sunlight) and my 1700 lugs a little; the smoke looks black. I was thinking just like you the first time it happend to me. Just my 2 cents.

Dick, leaking water would not be my first thought. Due to high compression pressure water could only get in when engine not running which doesn't seem to be the problem. One exception to my thought would be if there is a way for cooling water to get into the intake but again that wouldn't account for short duration of what you saw and when you saw it. My best guess is it is some kind of FI/combustion issue.

I wouldnt say that.If the head gasket was leaking you could definitly burn it causing white smoke while running. It will come in durring the intake stroke. Very common.... My 2000 also has a little bit of smoke occasionally when slightly lugged. I wouldnt even consider it mentionable though.

Are you sure that the smoke is not a little blue. A small amount of oil burning will look like white smoke. With it only occuring under acceleration I would thing oil.

I would think if this was a HG problem you would have hot combustion gases blowing into the cooling system along with signs of overheating and release of pressure at the radiator cap and loss of coolant.

This one time occurance, short in duration and after working under load with no mention of heating problem would rule out a HG problem.

YMMV

No over heating problem. I had one before, till I changed the radiator cap. So not anymore, and that is pretty good with a 1700 which has no water pump. Was out again today, and no problem, it was just a one time thing. so I think it was probably from lugging a little and then I probably got on it a little quick and like one guy said with the sun and shade it was probably black smoke, but looked white, in the lighting I had at the time.

Mickey_Fx,
I just try to avoid words like: cant, wont, never, etc....
I have seen plenty of coolant consumption leaks while running, granted the cooling system would likely indicate it too.

I know on older gasoline engines in cars , it your fuel mixture was too lean ,inside your tail pipes would look white.I don't think this is possible with the autos of today with computer controlled everything .I don't know enough about a diesel to know if it would be possible to get too lean of a fuel mixture (all of a sudden) into the combustion chamber to puff a little white smoke.

I had the same type of thing happen on a 1401 we were getting ready to sell. I was driving it down the road on a test drive, slowed down to let a car pass, throttled back up and it started smoking a lot. It would run fine at low RPM but, sometimes, when I throttled up it would smoke and lose power. It turned out to be a piece of the inside of the muffler broke loose and plugged the exhaust. Sometimes the piece would get in just the right spot to block it significantly causing lots of smoke, sometimes it would land sideways and not cause and problems. Just another thought.
