I have a strange situation, see if I can explain it. I changed my 4-wire outlet to 3-wire (in another (thread). It runs the welder just fine on 230v. I bought a large 50-foot extension cord for $25 and then configured the outlets how I wanted (as in the pic).

Here it shows 113.3v. If I pull the trigger on the angle grinder the volts goes to zero (~230mV) The generator will NOT run a 115v tool on the duplex outlet (off one of the legs). Does anybody know why?

I thought it might be a bad conductor in the cord but if I measure the voltage directly at the outlet (the same leg) it goes to ~zero (leg to ground) the same as it does out at the extension duplex. If I measure the other leg it goes to 230v (leg to ground).

It seems this generator objects to an imbalance in draws from each leg.

do you have 230v across both hots? and 115 from each hot to ground, and each hot to neutral? ( is that a 4 prong plug.. I can't see on my phone ). If you changed any outlets.. did you hook neutral back up? if not.. you could just have 230v, hot to hot...

I was looking at some Chinese gen sets the other day, and every one of them had a warning label on them, saying to NOT do just that.

Yes yes yes, but 3 wires, no neutral.
The wire color is cast into each terminal on the plug & receptacle. Would take some serious inattention to get 3 wires wrong.

Haha Rob, probably next to the label telling you to wear safety glasses. Too many warning lables that cry wolf. Agreed something is going on here, but what and why?

Mainly disappointed I can't get 115v at the end of my 230v extension cord.

You asked, I answered and it was the ONLY label any where around the outlets! AND BIG enough so it was obviously important...on every Chinese gen set they had in stock.

Is this a floating neutral or bonded neutral generator . There is much confusion out there about what ground is, what neutral is and what each is supposed to do.
The nameplate may say 10,000 watt , however continuous operation at such levels is not advised. Somewhere in the small print there will be a continuous rating . Loading to only to about 80% of Max continuous is recommended .

if it is not bonded neutral, that may be the issue.

it may have a safety ground, and 230v hot to hot, but may not have 115 h - n

Has it been tried using just one hot and the neutral?
my smaller 5500 watt gen does not have earth ground tied to neutral internally in the gen set, the green ground is only supplied by physically supplying an earth ground.

Sounds like you have the no neutral being supplied to the neutral wire in your 120 volt extension cord?

EDIT- Just as Soundguy alluded to- got to have a neutral to complete 120 volt circuits Glad it is functional

Mine says 8,000 continuous, 10,000 surge. It's in the book, but I know some people did not get the books packed with theirs.

You're right Gem99, by normal standards it's an "8,000W generator". The 10,000 is misleading.

It has 115v betw hot-to-ground, but won't put any power thru that circuit. Not using the neutral wire, it's isolated.

I think your on it. It had a 4-wire outlet, I used only 3 wires (Hot-Hot-Ground) Green/Y goes to the eqpt frame. (I isolated the gray(neutral) ). Heres a pic from the other thread.

Want to get the duplex (115v) outlets on the end to work. Is this problem because the neutral is isolated, but should be grounded?
