Smokers who really want to keep what rights they still have need to look at improving their "public image" rather than demanding their right to continue with thinking that is obviously NOT held in high favor by the majority. Failure to do so may at some date spell the end to smoking altogether.

Think of that statement during the next dry spell when the driver of the car you're following throws their butt out the window, or at the next stop light when you look at the thousands of butts on the ground, or when you're at the beach and your 1-1/2 year old neice picks them up and puts them in her mouth.

New York passed this law a few years back and the bar owners were all up in arms like you are hearing down there. You know what, all the bars are still open as people still want to drink.

For the smokers this is an inconvience to them. For most non-smokers, being around people who smoke all the time is an inconvience and is not healthy. The states are passing these laws to protect the rights and health of the non-smokers but they still allow people to smoke, they just have to go outside or to their car.

Pet Peeve of mine is cigarette butts on the ground, ESPECIALLY in my yard. People throw them out everywhere, I've even seen cops doing it...I guess it's not considered littering, shame really.

I'm for not having "smoking" sections in restaurant...confining smoke to one area is like building a dam out of screen. If they want to go outside to smoke, so be it. It's nice to eat a meal and not come home smelling like an ashtray.

I don't go to bars or clubs, but it seems that smoking and drinking go hand in hand, pun intended. If I were the type to go to a bar and get drunk, a little cigarette smoke shouldn't peave me off.

I actually eat at a bar often. I travel a bit for work and feel odd sitting at a table alone in a dining room. So I sit at the bar. I'll admit to recieving the benefit of these laws, I just disagree with the premise of having a law decide what I feel, free will and the market place should govern.

When I owned a rental, prospective renters respond to my add that specified "non smokers" and they would show up, get out of their car, drop their cig in the driveway and walk up to the door.

Doesn't the state already govern the sale of alcohol? They already have rules and regs that dictate what the bars have to abide by to sell alcohol. This law is just another rule.

I know for a fact the bars will not see any drop in customers. I have friends who own bars and they saw no drop at all.

And then my wife (the smoker) will turn into Godzilla. ;)

There's a great comeback to that comment...

That IS the problem. In NH a lot of us felt we don't need another rule. Again I am a non-smoker. My daughter is severly allergic to cig smoke. I find it unpleasant. So as a concerned parent and as a diner I found restaurants that catered to us non-smokers. Smokers should be given the same choice. We are adults and can make decisions for ourselves. The state just took a choice away from it's own citizens. Why?

Can't argue there. Used to live in MD who passed the first smoking ban back in the mid 90s. Bars cried foul but there was no lost of business.

The state passed the law just as a lot of other states have. The people passing the laws represent the people. Since this law is spreading, it is safe to assume the people passing the laws are doing so because the majority of the people are asking for it.

No one has said people can't smoke, just do it in your own area where it won't bother other people.

Here is a situation for you, you live in the area and know what places cater to non-smokers. Now what happens if you go to another area with your daughter? Do you drive for hours trying to find a place that caters to your needs because you don't know the area? This law was put into place to protect the health of workers that work at these places as well as the non-smoking patrons.

You're may be right in this particular case, but it may also be an erroneous assumption. You'll find many laws that are passed, not because the "majority" of the people want them, but because the most "vocal" people and/or the lobbyists want them. And the lobbyists with the most money to distribute get the laws they want.
