Smoking Kohler CV20

CSAW, thanks for latest info.

I have not had the valve cover off yet,going there next.

Can't tell how the oil drains back to the crankcase from
the Service Manual,have e-mail into Kohler to find out.

Left side cyl is lower than the right side cyl.

Will let you know how it goes along. Charlie

Talking to my nieghbor about his Scotts with a Kohler engine. I think it is a 20hp. Two and half years old and dropped the crankshaft out. Deere stood behind it and had a service bulletin out on it, but he found that out on his own and fought all the way to get a fresh engine.

On many OHV engines, a blown head gasket will cause
a severe smoking problem.

Kohler had a problem with their head gaskets and their head bolts. Go to your local dealer, and they have a kit available that should take care of your problem. Pull the heads and make sure it hasn't caused any gouging in the cylinders first.

Fisher, I have spec 160psi on both cyl.

Would you think that would rule out the gsk problem.

Final report. Blown headgasket on # ! cyc.

Wow, great thread! I have a CV25 with similar problems. Blue smoke on start, blue smoke during acceleration uphill, blue smoke when I back out of the hydro petal for a couple seconds and re-apply. If it was a car engine, I would be thinking valve seals or guides. I bought the manual and was just starting to diagnose. My compression check is also OK. Power is great as well. Only three grasscutting seasons on motor (150 hours). Spark plug gets oil fouled on the passenger side cylinder. I will pull the valve cover and head and check stuff out.
