Snakes Worse Than Usual This Year?

I hate to jinx myself, but my snake sightings for the year are way below normal. Just one so far this year. I'd think about five or six would be a normal year for me.

Our house sits on a high area with creeks and low areas not far away in most directions. I am thinking that all the rain we had from spring thru the end of July kept those low areas much wetter than normal and pushed the snakes up. Not unusual at all to see them at the "farm", but don't see many around the house.

I have a 6+ foot bull snake that lives in the well house, I leave the door cracked so he can come and go, cheaper than rat poison. Also see a coachwhip around my shop pad quite a bit. The only snakes I kill are copperheads.

Sorry, I had to do that. If the rain's driving them out in TX, the lack of it is keeping them home here in KY. I haven't seen a scale all year. Come to think of it... we're heavy on varmits this year too! When you all start trucking that hay to KY this fall, bring some snakes with you.

guess it depends on where you live. i've killed 5-6 per day sometimes. haven't see any more than usual this year

i have had a rattlesnake in my house, cottonmouths laying on the hood of my wifes vw, and several times a cottonmouth would be laying right outside my front door. my dogs have been bitten 5 times in 3 years. i kill every poisonous snake i see.

rat farm hmmmm. wonder if there is money in that?

It's been a record year for snakes around my place in East Texas. In one pond alone I've removed 10 cottonmouths. Never seen them this bad before. Also, while mowing pastures, I've seen several bite the bullet including a big rattler....keeping my eyes open the rest of this season.

That's fine. I didn't know they were all poisonous. You have to do what you have to do.

But:

1) I see all varieties of snakes labled as poisonous when they are not. You're probably better at it than most. But most people are truly terrible. The vast majority of snakes labled as water moccasins are brown water snakes which are huge, fat, very aggressive and have diamond shaped heads. The vast majority of copperheads are rat snakes and corn snakes.

2) I don't kill poisonous snakes. I leave them alone, yes, even in my yard, and yes, I've had copperheads in my yard, and in Florida, countless pygmy and cane brakes in the garage. The only inside snakes we've ever had have been black snakes and this one was apprehended and put right out the back door.

Still, I don't knock people for killing poisonous snakes around their homes. I kill wasps around my home....but not in the woods. Everyone has thier own threshold.

And no, there's no money in rat farming......don't ask.
