Neil

I remember years ago an aunt killed one when she closed the door on it. It appears it was trying to follow her into the house and got caught by the screen door. Also, as a teenager visiting down south, I ran across a copperhead on the sidewalk in front of a motel. So, I guess they could come in through the door.

Saw my first snake of the spring yesterday. A three foot long garter snake (harmless). This reminded me of the time I went out into the shed where I had an old Delta drill press. The type with step pulleys and a cover with a hole in the top. I turned the drill press on and immediately heard a terrible racket, wham! wham! wham! I turned off the drill press and lifted the guard and you guessed it. One very dead and beat up garter snake. He had crawled into the guard on the pulleys and curled up there to hide. They are still plentiful so I don't reckon I endangered the species. What a way to go. Question, do the toilets in "oz" go clock wise or counter clock wise. Sorry the devil made me ask.

Neil: I know this is an old post about snakes, but I just thought of something that might help you. If you live in a rural area, not a subdivision, you could get some Guinea fowl and let them roam loose. Guinea fowl are an African bird that hates snakes. My wife raises different fowl and geese and the Guinea fowl are a unique bird. They will worry a snake and attack it until they kill it or drive it off. Guineas will also eat ticks, flies and other pest insects. They are good "watch dogs" and will raise a ruckus if an animal or person comes on the property. This is why I asked about if you lived in a rural location, the birds are noisy. A flock of them can sound like a rock band with badly tuned guitars. The trade off is a little noise but you will not have any snakes in your yard and fewer insects. They are not for everybody but if you like animals (MY wife too well) you might give them a try.

I also saw my first snake of the Spring a couple of days ago while climbing a hill looking for a spot to locate a water storage tank. It was a 5' chicken snake all stretched out right where I was about to put my hand. It gave quite a start until I realized it was not poisonous. I just nudged it an let it slither away to find a rat to eat. Unfortunately my wife saw it and now is not sure she wants to go anywhere near the property again.

It sounds like you are talking about the Coral snake. I was always told that it had to "chew on you" in order to transmit enough venom to do any damage. I never wanted to test the theory. I grew up with four kinds of venomous snakes (rattlers, water moccasins, copper-heads & coral snakes) and got in the habit of assuming any snake was poisonous until proven otherwise.

I thought I was use to snakes until I move to Singapore in '95 to be greeted with a picture of an unfortunate rubber-tapper from just over the Malaysian border that had been swallowed up to his shoulders by a python. Then they found the cobra in one of the public parks...Yikes!
