Snakes !!!

No, that is a drip system pipe but that may be a good idea for keeping them critters away from the house. Of course you would have to watch where you are walking at night. Could be more deadly than the cactus. Here's another picture of the same snake. Sorta makes a fella wish he had a telephoto lens.

I guess if you grow up around them it doesn't bother one all that much..kinda glad I live above the frozen line at times.

Neil,
You are one tough cookie. Working in that office knowing snakes are all around. I
think you would be a good candidate for that new 'Fear Factor' show that we have over
here.

Bird

There are skunks all around my city property. I have had Bullmastiffs for nineteen years. When I worked first half I would come home and take my big male for a walk around the block at midnight. no one was out at this time so I let him run for a bit before I put him on his leash and walked around the block. One night I get to the corner and hear him barking up a storm. I walk back and look over my neighbors hedges. He has a skunk cornered. I yell: " YOU IDIOT. GET OVER HERE". With this , the skunk makes a break. Dog pursues. Two seconds later I hear: " YELP". Dog comes flying through the hedges at warp speed. Runs into my yard, buries his head in the grass and runs a hundred feet dragging his nose. Shaking my head in disgust, I put the dog in the cellar washroom. After half a night of mournful wailing I can't take it any more. I drag him into the washtub and scrub him with baby shampoo, stewed tomatoes, catsup, and any other tomato product I can find. Barely tolerable, I let the dog into the house and salvage what sleep I can. Shortly thereafter my female corners a skunk. Repeat above. Now, when my female smells a skunk she goes insane. The hair on her back goes up and she charges around like a rampaging bull.
Bullmastiffs may be a noble and protective breed, but I think that, perhaps, they are not the most intelligent.

Yep, Ron, Dallas has always had'em in town, too./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif The first three and a half years we were married, we were assistant managers of a 104 unit apartment complex, with a big vacant field across the street. I got a call about 2 a.m. one morning when one of our tenant's little poodle barked, so the lady went to the back door and opened it and the poodle charged right into a skunk standing at the door./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif She thought her little poodle might die 'cause it was so sick, but I assured her that was not the case. And since it happened right in the door, we had to move the tenant to another apartment for several days and have hers professionally fumigated./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Don't know whether they still do it, but back then anyone could go to the city animal shelter and check out a live trap, bait and set it, then call the animal shelter and they would come get it when you had an animal caught in it. I did that; baited the traps with sardines and got rid of a few neighborhood skunks that way./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Neil:

Here is an item found on the internet.

Do Snakes Like Music ? : You've heard people sing 'Snake your Booty?' No , wait , that's ... Whatever . Snakes do seem to respond to musical vibrations , and some will actually come out to see what's happening when the music starts playing . Especially if it's a band like . But just because they seem to be interested doesn't mean that they like what they 'hear' (more likely feel) . One rock group that was touring with some diamondbacks had to remove them because the loud sounds were causing them distress . The fact that some snakes react badly to loud or bass music has been reported by many snake owners . One woman found that music from groups like Nine Inch Nails caused her snakes to slither around frantically and spiral into tight coils . Sometimes , the response is even worse . One owner reported that once when he was jamming on his bass guitar , his snake 'came out of her hidey-hole' and defecated all over the front glass of her enclosure . 'Everyone's a critic' he said philosophically . If your snake seems to be bothered when you play music , you don't have to turn your Cd , Radio , Tv , or whatever off , or even down . One herper -that is , someone who is interested in reptiles or amphibians- found it calmed her snakes when music was playing if she put her snakes' enclosures on computer mouse pads . These absorbed some of the offending vibrations . Or at least that's what she thinks , since her snakes stopped 'complaining' .

Hope it's of use.
