Snap Ring Pliers

This is the set I've had on the farm since the mid 1980's.

I'm sure it paid for itself in the first couple of years.

Harbor Freight makes a very cheap pair of ring pliers with multiple interchangeable heads. Not pro quality but much better than trying to deal with ring clips without the tool.

I have had the old Channelock 907G with interchangeable tips https://www.channellock.com/927T-Replacement-Tip-Kit.aspx for years and they never failed me yet. The different dia tips make them more useful. I sold the Tekton ones (4 pk) at the flea mkt. recently and they sold out fast. I believe they were all the same diameter tips just different configuration. Looked nice but cant say how well they worked

Don't ever get those cheapo red handled ones unless you want a lesson in frustration :D

I have those from HF. I use them weekly. I cuss weekly. I'm watching this thread for better suggestions.

Don't be too hard on HF. Even the set made by Irwin Tools gets mixed results on Amazon. Irwin makes great pliers generally.

The protos are worth it.

Don't be too hard on them? The snap ring pliers are junk! They twist instead of spreading/expanding anything but the mildest of rings. As I've mentioned before... the quality of their tools is fair-to-poor, but sometimes acceptable. The snap ring pliers are not even acceptable and I'm giving fair cautionary warning to anyone that intends to purchase them that they will be disappointed rapidly if they intend to use them on anything larger than 3/4" or smaller than 1/2". They flex. The pins aren't large enough for larger rings or small enough for smaller rings. Save your money on this one and purchase something else.

Success! I went with the Channellock 929 as a mid-priced option. Couldn't justify the Proto's for as little as I'll use them. I rebuilt one stabilizer and both swing cylinders on my backhoe and they are now leak free. Messy, dirty job but nice to have it done. The pliers were a bit clunky but worked well enough. I can see where these wouldn't be the choice for someone doing this work routinely. Thanks everyone for the suggestions on the pliers.

I know you have already purchased a pair of snap ring pliers and are happy with them, but for future reference you might look at another choice. I bought the entire set of 8: 4 exterior and 4 interior pliers for myself and have never used a more reliable or better constructed pair. I know they are pricey, but just my 2 cents.
