I need to rebuild a couple of cylinders. Years ago I used a snap ring tool that locked which made things much easier. Anyone have recommendations for a good, locking snap ring tool?
The Proto one are awesome but must have a gold or platinum core. :greedy:
I had to rebuild my FEL cylinders (2" bore) and I purchased a pair of Channellocks. They worked just fine for me though I don't do this everyday. Sounds like mine may have been the fluke, but my hometown pride hopes your's were the fluke ones. YMMVTwo in a row. But absolutely could've been a fluke.
Harbor Freight makes a very cheap pair of ring pliers with multiple interchangeable heads. Not pro quality but much better than trying to deal with ring clips without the tool.
Don't be too hard on HF. Even the set made by Irwin Tools gets mixed results on Amazon. Irwin makes great pliers generally.I have those from HF. I use them weekly. I cuss weekly. I'm watching this thread for better suggestions.

Success! I went with the Channellock 929 as a mid-priced option. Couldn't justify the Proto's for as little as I'll use them. I rebuilt one stabilizer and both swing cylinders on my backhoe and they are now leak free. Messy, dirty job but nice to have it done. The pliers were a bit clunky but worked well enough. I can see where these wouldn't be the choice for someone doing this work routinely. Thanks everyone for the suggestions on the pliers.
