I used to plow 'semi commercially' and fairly often somebody would slide off the road and call for assistance.
To my clients I never asked for extra usually saying ' all part of the service'. Most were more friends than clients.
Then there were those that left for a $25.00 lower plowing price but when the slid off the road still called.
When it came to cost my usual answer was ' hey, drop me off a bottle of wine' (choice of quality, vintage etc was their choice, LOL plunk or vintage)
Well one who always claimed he was a poor student (yeah, new car and a rented cottage for the WE's ??) well I had towed him out once with his 'poor student story' but never saw that wine.
Well his late Sun PM call that he was in the ditch (was in PJ's at the time of the call) gave me the opportunity to get the books balanced.
I arrived at his 'event area', dropped the plow blade and advised him that the late night call was $50.00. Cash!
He naturally hemmed and hawed denying that he had never forgot his previous promise.
Story end is that he went home and I was $50,00 ahead.
Shucks it was a Sunday nite at 11:30!
Hey, CAA I'm not. (LOL I did suggest he call CAA) (*CAA is Cdn Auto , like AAA)
I also knew that CAA would charge $75 in our area unless U had the CAA PLUS card.

We were told not to wave to a certain gentleman, I ignored the rule and found out why, he didn't take his hand off the wheel when he waved back and changed lanes.
Our town has a distinct division between in town and out of town, high unemployment and welfare, lots of disputes are settled in the pub carpark after closing on Saturday nights, do I want to be part of that, no thanks, we get on well with all the other land owners and business owners but the great unwashed are the ones who tell us we are not locals.
If being a local is one of them then I don't want to be, not a snob, just selective about who I associate with.

A cheap local carpenter I hired years ago, pretty rough around the edges told how they wanted to kick the crap out of some stranger at the local watering hole. Why? He was on one of those sayal phones!

Nowadays, I think that might not be a bad idea.

I have lived here in this township for 23 years, the locals still call me an import. I do most of my shopping locally except for once a month trips to North Bay. Anybody that wants help, I do if I am capable of it. How much to pay, you ask. My answer is 'whatever'. If I think you paid too much, you will get change.

The disabled neighbour that I plow out offered me $40.oo to catch himself up on the plowing the other day. I gave it back to him. Merry Christmas. It just rubs me the wrong way to take money off people on fixed incomes at Christmas.

Now I believe her because when the neighbors stop by, they mostly ***** about each other. Guess weæ±*e considered neutral parties.

Slightly off topic but in keeping with helping.

Fedex got stuck in my drive and the driver asked to use my phone to call a towing as cell is useless here.
I said 'forget it, I'll fire up the tractor' and he was out in 5 mins.
I pointed out it would be an hour B4 any towing would arrive.

Next day Fedex delivered a nice 'thank you gift',( probably $35-40 item), Real class act and totally unexpected but I sure appreciated the thought.

Fedex is delivering and picking up 3 to 4 times each day...

One of the first people I see will be the Fedex driver with critical medical delivery...

I appreciate their time schedule and they are always pleasant... also it helps that they know they can get in out quickly...

Have not met a bad Fedex driver...

UPS also is here and the regular driver is great... the relief drivers are hit of miss.

In the country... the local general mercantile will accept packages which is wonderful... they really help out... one of the new city neighbors said the price of gas is a little high and they drive into town and shop Costco.

I said we are blessed to have a little general store with gas pumps and friendly people that will accept packages... the alternative could be 10 miles or more...

Whenever I am in Washington I make it a point to save my empty tanks for fill-up there that buy other things...

We almost lost the gas pumps because the owner was facing a huge cost to upgrade... they made the commitment and we support it.

I think this is a telling difference of neighbor helping neighbor.

I have no axe to grind with UPS.
That said: FedEx is always my first choice for shipping.
