Tires Snow handling: Turf Tires (R3) vs. Ag Tires (R1/R4)

This comment reminds me that I need to make a video at some point to dispel myths regarding snow removal. I can push enough snow with my tractor that it's flowing over the loader. I can stall the engine pushing snow if I get aggressive. All without weights or chains, "only" turf tires.

Terrain and snow conditions determine my tire/chain needs.
Every situation is different and so are one's traction requirements.

Anyone try the Nokian tractor tires?

There doesn't seem to be any one formula for tires and snow. It just depends on conditions.

A decade ago we moved a quarter mile away - going from a north-south valley to an east-west one. Same tractors and same kind of terrrain. At the old place we used chains a lot and at the new one we haven't yet. Various tractors haves R1 Ag tires, some with R4 universal, and two with turfs.

Turfs more closely resemble the traditional snow tire, tread wise.
On the other hand Nokian are the most popular with local snow contractors, but comments are that they wear out somewhat faster, might be due to softer cold weather rubber.

Probably been said but my BX has turf tires and I live in a snow belt. Never had a problem with snow but ice is a killer. Any steeper slopes with ice and your butt will be puckering bike sliding down the hill with no control whatsoever. Rear chains were the answer for me. Go anywhere and no sliding. I plow my 500 driveway with a BXPanded bucket plow and love it!

No, but I sure want to. I never really looked hard, but was not able to find a somewhat local place to buy them. Plus they seem to cater to large ag machines.
Nokian seems to be the tire of choice all over Europe.

BX 1860 with turf tires and snow blade, plow concrete driveway and 1500’ asphalt road. 6”-12” of snow. Been doing it 8 years don’t ever remember tires spinning.

What is so great about Nokian tires ? Some different tread pattern or what ?

They have several styles of tractor tires as well as heavy truck and trailer and pickup, suv, and car tires.
I have their snow tires on my truck and my wifes car they perform very well.

different tread patterns,

Agricultural tyres / Nokian Heavy Tyres

The snow rated tractor tire do have a compound that grips much better in the cold and the are radials so they have a big foot print.
I was thinking of installing on my M7060 so the tire would not tear up the hay field as fast as R1's
Cost was $4000 if I kept my old tires.
