I am a highway supervisor in Illinois and we deal with the same situations listed in this post. I understand how homeowners feel when we have to plow their driveways shut, we don't want to but we have many miles of highway to keep open, if we stopped and messed around with each entrance we would not get anything done. And occasionally I have to call the State Police when some homeowner and part time "snow pusher" cleans their drives out onto the state highway. What moron would push a pile of snow out to be hit by high speed traffic? Oh well , just wanted to get that off my chest. Snow removal with me is a love/hate relationship, it causes all kinds of stress and headaches but when you clean a big storm up and traffic is moving well on your highways and the county and city still has problems it makes you feel very satisfied.

The guy that plows the road here is a real PITA according to my wife. She is always fighting with him /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif, complaining about him /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif, and generally making his life miserable when it snows. Nothing has changed in 20 years and he still puts the snow where he wants, when he wants, and how he wants. Some days he doesn't even plow until the day after the snow storm. She just keeps complaining to him and he continues to ignore her. I bet that one day he is just going to stop plowing because of all here complaining about the quality of the plow work that he does.... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Some people just don't appreciate a good snow plow driver. I do remember a day back in 1987 when she did make him a hot cup of coffee!!

Glad to hear you are having fun and are one-up on the snow plow. (hope they don't bite too hard or too deep /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

One thing I do is place the mail box on the leading side of the drive, so the plow driver (when winging the snow back) has to go around the mail box. That forces him to drop the snow before he gets to my driveway. When he gets past the mail box, he doesn't have much snow to drop in my drive.

A very good friend who plows for the county said there is a game they play (gets boring plowing hour after hour) when they are plowing after the paper is delivered in the paper's box. That is to get the plowing speed just right to get the snow coming off the plow to hit the steel post the paper box is on, causing it to bend back a bit, and spring forward, tossing the paper onto the ground. Score one for each paper tossed out. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I once was running the wing on a snowplow (big V plow on a big OshKosh truck) in a rural area, when we came to a farmers drive where the farmer had piled a huge pile of snow along the road just before his driveway. Seems the driver and the farmer went way back to childhood days, and the driver insisted I drop the wing just before we got to that huge pile of snow. He moved the V-plow to the right, and we caught that big pile, and rotated and slid it so it ended up completely in the middle of the driveway. The driver was getting quite a chuckle out of that trick as we headed off down the road to the 3-4' drifts that we had to bust through.

P.S. I don't like snow plowed into my driveway either. But, I too, now have the easy solution to move it out.

The town guys that plow our street do a great job with both the plow and the wing and seem to keep the piles at the end of the drives to a minimum. I live on one of the main roads so they are always plowing by my house. They always manage to miss the mailbox and paper tube.
We have not had as much snow as last year so they have not had to shelve the side of the roads yet! the operative word here is YET.

Cynical?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I thought I was clearly being humorous. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Junkman - I'm sorry if I came across as being serious. Although I will say in my own defense that I did use the Happy emoticons to show that I was kidding around. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Anyone that chases a small white ball around acres of land cannot be serious or cynical.... I would just call them "insane"... LOL.... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif As for the "cup of coffee", he said that it tasted like mud and that he was afraid that she was trying to poison him.... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I noticed in your profile that you are a "risk manager".... do the risks that you manage have anything to do with your golf game?????? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Only if you stand in back of me when I'm taking a shot. That's the most dangerous location. The safest place would be in front! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Seriously, I thought you were having a little fun with your description about your wife's dislike for the snowplow operator. I read that as if you were trying to conceal the fact that she didn't like the way you plowed your driveway. You know, one of those...."I have this friend....." things that people say when they're talking about themselves.

And as far as being insane.....well, I've been called worse things! Believe me, there are plenty of days when I'm out there chasing that small ball white ball around those acres of land when I say to myself....You must be insane!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I've never had a problem with the plows dumping snow in the driveway....it has to go somewhere and that's why I have a Kubota. What drives me nuts is when they decide they need to move the snow back from the edge of the road and instead of keeping the wing up off the ground and shelfing the snow back they drop it right down on the ground and roll up everyone's lawn. I know the town has the right of way but everyone that lives there puts a lot of effort into maintaining it and there really isn't a need to drop the wing on the ground.
