Snow Plowing a Gravel Drive - Problem Solved!!!

/ Snow Plowing a Gravel Drive - Problem Solved!!! #21
I haven't tried skid shoes on my rear blade, but have them on my front blade (8' converted truck plow). They work ok on pavement, but gouge down too far on gravel. Then they become useless. Or worse than useless because of the deep tracks they leave behind as they plow through the ground. If the ground was frozen solid, I think they'd work just fine, but that's rarely the case here in VA.

Wheels instead of shoes.

I have a 56" plow originally bought for a garden tractor. Recently I modified it so it would clamp to the FEL bucket on my NH TC33D.

I hadn't used it yet because I didn't want my gravel driveway moved into my yard.

Last night I cut down a length of schedule 40 1-1/2" steel pipe and welded it to the "cutting edge" (in quotes because I never received a real cutting edge with the plow, just bolted a strip of flatbar on) and tried out my "new" bucket plow.

Worked like a charm, I think I'm going to try the same thing on my PTO snowblower. (It's a 48" Ariens front-mount, modified it to work with a White 2055 garden tractor and then modified to to go on the 3-point of the TC33D)

I used an old tire (not steel belted) for a rubber edge. Cut it up with a Sawsall using a metal cutting blade.

Drilled the holes Luddite style with Grandad's brace & steel bit - no electricity or fancy alloys & very slow rpm (shoulder speed). Worked great - no boogers.

Good idea jambx.

I was thinking of using those mats to make ''Traction aids''. I can't find the ones they used to sell ,made of steel ,around here. I still have a few in my garage and my neighbors wants to borrow them all the time when they get stuck in snow. I even used them when my tractor got stuck on ice and got me out in no time.
I would drill holes and puts bolts in them for more traction.
I will post some pics when they are done.

I picked one of those mats at TSC this morning....going to give it a try on both my snow blades....tractor and 4-wheeler. I used my el-cheapo HF multi-vibrating tool to make the cuts. It worked very good.....made two 6 foot cuts in just a few minutes.

Hi guys are you talking abought having your blade facing forward or reverse reverse works okay.

My driveway is one tenth mile of gravel, including a circle drive and parking space in front of the non-attached garage/shop. My approach is to "push" the snow with my BX2660 in reverse and my blade angled to push the snow to the edge of the drive. By pushing with the backside of the blade, the snow moves nicely but the gravel stays put. We had nine inches here in Missouri this week, and I made short work of my drive and parking areas as well as a couple of the neighbor's. I could turn the blade all the way around and drive forward, but I don't like packing the snow down with my wheels. By pushing in reverse, I blade the snow before my tires roll over it.

I think this product changed based on my reading online at TSC.com. has anyone tried making this with the replacement product? How did it turn out? Looks like it no longer has the grooves or the texture on it like the one from the pic above. Not sure if it will matter or not but wanted to check with you guys anyway.
