T-shirt weather..geeze don't I wish for some of that about now.

There is talk about a satellite which the goverment feels it could control the weather patterns...bad idea!!

This is what it looked like here in southern Maine this morning. The bottom of the maibox is 38" above the road and the backs on the lawn chairs are 39" high./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Thomas, I wouldn't mind some more snow. Makes for fun tractoring. Besides, I know it'll be a couple of months 'til I can do some "field work". Glad we don't have an official mud season though.

Bird and Harv, the septic stroll isn't all that far fetched up here right now. A few south facing slopes are melting off, but this is the longest we've had snow on the ground in years. The little things become apparent:

1) The grass under the snow is packed down like a pancake. Looks awful, but experience tells us we'll be cutting it again come spring.

2) Fencing contractors will be raking it in in the spring. Lot's of parking lots have snow piles pushing out the fencing and knocking over posts.

3) Same with landscaping contractors. Some of the newer strip malls and such haven't ever experienced snow piles like these. Those nice looking trees without established root systems just get bowled right over by a big Cat loader full of snow.

4) Parking lots keep getting smaller and smaller.

5) Ice dams and water damage are very common this year. We've been lucky at home with none, but at work we've go icicles falling from an upper level flat roof to a lower level and punching holes right through the asphalt. Lots of leaks onto some very expensive equipment. Visqueen sales are hot /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

6) My wife and I have complained for years that the snow doesn't stick around long enough to enjoy it (X-country skiing etc.). Wouldn't you know it, this year one of us, or one of the kids has been sick nearly every weekend. I guess that's a downside to being couped up all winter long.

All in all, its a lot of fun and I wouldn't trade the four seasons for anything. Come on up and see what it's all about!

Thomas, Not trying to wish you any bad luck, but the latest forecast is showing another major storm heading accross the upper mid-west tomorrow and of course, heading East.We are in for rain "I hope".Ain't this winter been a deal?

Thomas,

Glad to report no repeat performance like the other day./w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

I'm seriously considering chains for those rear 12-16.5 R'4s. Just have to decide on a style and source. Didn't get stuck but spun the wheels a lot.

I hear ya on the FEL, it got quite a work out today. Couldn't do much with the blade at first.

A come along is handy for sure. What are you anchoring it to?

BTW, I'll be looking for the Crocus. First to bloom. Even thru the snow. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Reminds me of one of the golden retrievers we rescued. Glenfiddich was a city pup, so he was afraid of the dark. He was also a winter pup, so had never seen ground when we got him. All winter he happily pooped on the snow, but toward May when the snow began thinning so patches of ground were visible, he became worried. All the way to the end of June, as the snow melted, he would roam further and further from home in search of a patch of snow on which to do his thing! Poor little guy! He was constipated for day when that last patch of snow melted!

DFB, your pictures make me jealous. Looks like you're having a blast. We're back to slush here. Supposed to get some rain tomorrow.

Are those JD wheel weights on your tractor? How difficult to remove/install?

DFB,
I guess you and the rest by now know that I'm a firm believer when it comes to tire chains, maybe its do from the farm days on Farmall H.

Have you decided what type of chains to purchase yet?

Great pictures!!
Kinda looks what I did yesterday but the <font color=orange>color<font color=orange><font color=black> all wrong. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

When stuck I'll hitch my 10 ton come along to anything thats solid...trees..telephone poles..p/u.etc..

Enjoy the day and rest up for the weekend, could be a long one.

Rob,

Yea, those are JD weights. 2 carriage bolts with nuts and lockwashers hold each one on. I had to use different bolts than came in the mounting kit to attach the first one to the rim because the 4100 had round holes and the supplied square shank carriage bolt wasn't going to work. Universal fit I was told./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif It helped for me to have an x-tra hand to get the first one bolted to the rim. After that they stack one on top of the other. The holes on the weights are slotted to hold the square shanks of the carriage bolts. It works like this, install the bolts thru the weight first, start the nuts to hold things together, then line it up and turn. I have two stacked. Can use three total per wheel. They fit well, even with 3 they don't stick out too far. Does your 790 have square cut holes in the rims?

Gotta go now. A neighbor called and wants to pay me to move the snowbanks he piled at the end of his drive so he can see the oncoming cars. /w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif Nice day too. Sunny and 30+ degrees.

Thanks DFB. Yes, my 790 has square holes in the rims. I checked on JD weights some time ago and they were pretty salty. Nearly $100 each and I'd want four. If I recall, they were 60 pounds each. I do like the look though. Did you get yours with the tractor or add them later?

You're probably out having fun right now. Enjoy the snow while you can /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Green grass / Septic tank 101

Ok. All of the waste water from a house with a septic tank flows through the tank into the septic field. That means water and water mixed with other stuff is going into the tank. Two things happen. First, the water going into the tank is generally warmer than the surrounding ground and ground cover (tank is buried with dirt on top and grass growing). Second, due to the interesting mixture of things in a septic tank, you do get some chemical reaction causing a bit of heat. All of this to say, it's warmer on top of the septic tank and that causes the snow to melt before any surrounding areas. Voila.........a patch of green grass in an otherwise snowy and frozen landscape.

So, in the middle of winter if you need to find some green grass to walk on or just to remind you of warmer times, simply look to the part of the yard where the septic tank is buried.

It's the little things, you know.

Weather forecast for Michigan this morning was predicting 50 degrees (maybe a bit more) for tomorrow and Friday. Probably some light rain to go with it, and maybe even a brief thunderstorm. All in all, pretty weird weather again this year.

My wife hopes we'll see more grass than what's over the septic tank before the weekend's over.

Rob,

Didn't get 'em with the tractor, but got 'em as soon as I realized that I needed more traction to drag my landscape rake thru about an acre of newly bulldozed ground last summer. Those heavy rains we had around here left it all rutted and washed out. What a mess I had. Seemed like every time I pulled it back together we would get another torrential downpour. As one of my close buds always says "ya gotta do what ya gotta do". What ain't pricey from JD. After its all said and done I guess you have to look at it as an investment.

BTW, Glad to hear that you didn't go thru with the idea of using the 790's bucket as an ice chest for the party./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
