Well maybe you folks from down south like this soup but for me its just too friggin hot/w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif . Even worked up a sweat just going out to the compost heap!

Temps have only gotten into the mid 90's here - but the humidity adds a definite multiplier. I've been in high desert at 108 and been much more comfortable. Guess I'll just keep working on basement projects.

Those big snowstorms seem mighty inviting right now.

I know exactly what you mean Andy. I'd settle for a little rain right now. We're no where near a drought, but it's still pretty dry (other than the humidity). Had to water 200 trees Sunday and sweated every minute of it /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Been running just about the same here. Temps in the mid to upper 90's with humidity to match. You go outside and it feels like walking into an oven.

The weatherman has promised us only 2 more days of this and then a little cooling front. Yesterday they were promising rain and mid 60's by Sunday. So, help may be on the way. I'll try not to use up all of the cool before it gets to you. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I think we are. Last drop of rain was July 1. Sure would like to see a couple of inches of rain, but would be glad to settle for a foot of snow./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Bird,

I'm not sure, but I think a couple inches of rain make considerably more than a foot of snow. Usually they give us the converwsion factor on the news at least once a winter, just to astound us, but I really don't pay much attention. When the snow is up to your posterior and your thighs are frozen from wading through it, knowing that it's only a couple inches of rain really doesn't help much. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

If I recall right, 1" of rain equals something like 32" of snow, or 17" of snow, or something like that. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

How long has it been since you had rain, and how is your garden handling it?

Re: Snow would be real nice \'bout now

SHF, as you might guess, I don't know a lot about snow./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif I understand that cold, dry, fluffy snow can be equal to a lot less water than a heavy wet snow, and I'd heard that on average about 10" of snow was the equivalent of 1" of rain. Don't remember where I heard it and had no idea whether it was true or not.

As for the garden, most of it was done by June 17 and then I mowed down the last of it (okra & tomatoes) on July 18, gave it a few days for the mowed vegetation to dry, then plowed it under. If we get some rain, I'd like to plant a few turnips in late September; otherwise gardening is through until late January.

I don't know much about snow either, but I've heard 10" is about like an inch of rain. But really its better because it slowly soaks into the ground instead of running into the creek.

Re: Snow would be real nice \'bout now

Bird,
Just curious as to why you quit gardening in July? Is it because it gets too hot, not enough water? If not enough rain couldn't you just water it from your well?

Andy,

Careful what you wish for..... /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif I already have some trees starting to turn up here in Northern NH. /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif Winter will be here before you know it.

Re: Snow would be real nice \'bout now

Richard, I don't have a well. We're on a community water system. I quit early for a variety of reasons: laziness, heat, lack of rain, grasshoppers, freezers both full, and canning jars all full./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif If I had wanted to water the garden more and use insecticide, it would still be producing, but we couldn't use anymore than we could eat fresh at the time and/or give away, so we just quit early. I'm not opposed to the use of chemicals; just that I haven't seen any real need to use them so far on the garden (I do use them around the house, shop, and yard), but if the grasshoppers continue next year I may change that practice.
