Re: Snow would be real nice \'bout now

Well maybe you folks from down south like this soup LIke it? I wouldn't go that far. I would say it's more like we are "use to it". Temps of around 100 are typical here at this time of the year. You learn to suspend working in the heat of the day if you can. If you can't then you learn to work slower, and get in some shade whenever you can.
I did some hauling for a outfit that was putting in a manhole in San Antonio last week. In the downtown area they are required to hire police to handle traffic problems. At this site there was no shade around, the cop they had there had only to go out in the street occasionally to stop traffic. In the between time he would go stand in the only shade available, from a telephone pole./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I wonder if they teach that at the academy?/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
Rain? Since about the middle of june I've had maybe 2/10 of an inch here on my land.

Re: Snow would be real nice \'bout now

The heck with this heat. I got the tractor ready to push snow any day. I get lethargic and don't get much done in summer. Damn grass quits growing in winter and ya can get some real things done around the house.

I figure if he hadn't learned to look for some shade in Texas in the summer before he was old enough to get in the academy, he'd be too dumb to hire./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

And I thought the dry spell was bad here. At least we did get 2.5" in two days; June 30/July 1 and none since, but maybe we're better off than you. Bears may like to hibernate in the winter, but I think July-September is a preferable time./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Bird, Everone I've talked to so far has not gotten a second cutting off their hay. Some have been feeding it because they have run out of grass. If this winter is unusually hard or dry, I expect to see hay brought down from up North, and some very high prices/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Re: Snow would be real nice \'bout now

Bird,

I've heard a lot of different numbers for the amount of snow you get from an inch of rain. I think they vary it based on the temperature. Up in the UP, they get a lot of snow but it's drier and fluffier, we don't get as much but it's heavy and wetter.

Your garden is pretty much done by June? How many crops can you get in a season? We're just starting to forget about frost by June.

The good news on the weather for us Northern folks is that the Canadians are coming through again and sending us a bunch of cool air. It was 105 degrees here yesterday, with incredible humidity. By tomorrow, the weatherman has promised temps between 65-80 and low humidity. Temps are supposed to start falling by 3:00 this afternoon, and maybe some rain. Thought I was going to fry my brains yesterday, now I'll have to wear a sweater /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif. This front should be out east by Friday or Saturday, so hold on guys, the Cavalry is coming.

Re: Snow would be real nice \'bout now

SHF, a lot of people set out onions in January around here, and I've been setting out mine in February and having a great crop, but this year, we had too much rain early in the year (wish we had some of it now), so it was too wet to get into the garden and I didn't start planting anything until March 22 and instead of planting different things at different times as I usually do, we planted everything on March 22 and 23. We had the smallest onions we ever had because the grasshoppers literally ate the entire tops off and they quit growing when it got hot. We had our first onions and radishes to eat on 4/29, bell peppers on 5/13, cucumbers and green beans on 5/16, black-eyed peas and sweet corn on 6/8, potatos on 6/17, cantaloupes on 6/20, etc. I guess we're about through with the garden by the time you start. There are a number of things, such as okra, black-eyed peas, and tomatoes, that will continue to produce until Fall if you use insecticides and water enough, but I just haven't done that.

And our weatherman is saying there's a possibility of some rain this weekend, but I wouldn't count on it.

We are one day behind you - I can't wait! Humidity has dropped a bit in the last 24 hours but they are still forecasting a heat index reading around 105 or so.

If you are recycling our yesterday's weather, you aren't going to like today AT ALL. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif Best tip, keep plenty of cold stuff to drink and find someplace with some air conditioning. I was stuck in my car through all of it yesterday (no air). Thought for sure my brain was gonna fry. Today, of course, I scheduled as a desk day, so it'll be much cooler.

Another good indicator is the news this morning talking about a disabled lady to whom KMart is donating a free air conditioner. To be delivered today. THAT should break the heat wave! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Re: Snow would be real nice \'bout now

Bird,

As I recall, by the end of March, we were just seeing the snow go away. I do envy that growing season, but I don't envy the heat. We just don't know how to deal with it like you do. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

We've got a couple of transplanted Texans up here and we have fun listening to them complain about the heat. Said they thought they'd gotten away from it. Sure was fun telling them it hasn't really gotten HOT yet! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif OR cold! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif.

Rain would be nice here too. They're predicting a couple of chances over the next week. All of the papers and local news have been covering the lack of rain. Apparently the corn and soybean crops are critical. If these guys lose their crop, they've lost the whole year, because there won't be another till next year. So far, I've seen 1 hay cutting. Don't know if they'll get a fall cutting or not. Fields are pretty brown right now. (Mine crunches when you walk on it) /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif Even stuff growing back under the trees is starting to wilt.

Re: Snow would be real nice \'bout now

Ernie,

Here in northern Illinois we have been dry for awhile also. My parent's third cutting was pitiful. One 32 acre field only produced 43 bales! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif This was due to low moisture and rampant "leaf hoppers".
