Chains on the front might be ok but not on tractors with 4 wheel drive.
What's the point then? I guess you know more about this than all the municipalites that have been doing this way since day one.... I won't speak on this any more... I do know if I say sunny and skies will probably be blue, You, Mr LBrown will bring it to argument in short order, and insist the skies will be black.

Larry,

I have hopped over from the JD forum because I have an interest in this topic. I live in western NC and although we do not get NY sized snows often, we do get quite a lot at times (and it get darn cold, too). My area has a unique problem, that being of snow with icy underlay and steep grades, many of which can be greater than 20%. My understanding specifically related to compact tractors, is that the spur gears in many of these lighter weight, higher horsepower machines might not be up to the potential torque peaks that could occur when plowing with front chains. Interestingly though, many of us do this daily when we use our loaders or move gravel, etc. Also, our local dealer has said he recommends against them mainly because people with limited experience do not install them correctly, making a potential for the chain to come loose and damage the tractor or operator. This would not be a issue so much for machines with heavier front differentials and for folks with more plowing experience, such as commercial or municipal plowers. That said, JD for example offers a front tire chain for its compact tractor. This probably says as much as anything about what the company thinks about front chains on its compact machines. One would think (and hope) that if they felt it unsafe or not beneficial, the chain would not be offered. I do not have any now, but have a set on order for our big snow months of Jan and Feb, so that I will not slide off the hill. For me, I would replace a spur gear rather than lose control on a steep unguarded roadside, so my vote is "pro" front chain.

jmseven, I think you summed it up; if JD offers chains for it's CUTs then they MUST be compatable. Why would a respected manufacturer sell/install an item that would damage it's machine and thus incur warranty claims against itself?? I do understand that the tractor's dynamics would be changed and due care should be exercised, but if you cannot take the time to learn how to properly operate your machine you have no business operating it IMO. I can understand some dealers being reluctant to offer them to less experienced operators. Just like chain saw dealers pushing safety chain due to liability concerns even though they limit a chainsaws cutting performance.

This all stated, I will contact my dealer to get his take and order a set if appropriate. Besides, that's why I used a respected dealer to begin with.

I had good luck getting the chains from tirechain.com. The Rockwell scale is 360 on the steel in the chains.
I also purchased these tirechains
which are nice.
The chains I got from JD for a Gator are low grade steel FYI and cost more.

Where the **** is the snow? I live south of Buffalo and although we tend to get more than the famed Buffalo, we are getting robbed this year. The Holiday Valley ski resort is not even running yet and it is the middle of December. BAD BAD BAD for business.

Rumor has it that Lake Erie's temperature has gone up so the first Noreaster is going to blast us. Watch the news for cool stories about Buffalo later this winter...I bet we make headlines again and I bet I will be glad for the chains and weighted tires on the Kioti.

Over the weekend I got in touch with a big seller of car and tractor chains, they are located in Pa and advertise a lot on the I-Net. Here is basically what he had to say on the subject of CHAINS ON THE FRONT TIRES OF 4 WD TRACTORS:
In 20 yrs of selling chains I have never heard of anyone having problems running chains on 4 wd tractors. He also told me my best source of info would probably be a tractor dealer and I'm sure he did that to cover his back.
I think I am going to wait until I see what the 45 does in the snow without and then make a choice, am also going to check with my neighbor who plows commercially in the winter with diesels and 4wd's.
Like Larry I am not going to write anymore on the subject.

All Rite then since it's ok to run chains on the front it would also be ok to miss match the front and rear tires correct?

I like to mismatch left and right tires--
I did this years ago on my 1969 Ford Galaxie; radials on the left, studded snow tires on the right...
It makes banking the sharp curves in West Virginia more interesting. ;)
