Please consider buying them a car. Don't consider it a great gift you are buying them, Gee dad we are getting our own car. Consider it as protection against your car.
Most young people have an accident, even though often it is not their fault. Learning defensive driving takes time and is usually learned much faster after you have had an accident that is not your fault. Both my kids had accidents, none involving injury, within a year or two of having their license.
We were pretty friendly with our neighbors, and when his daughter was going to be driving I passed along this same advice. He well could afford to pick up a used car for his daughter but jsut didn't want he to have her own car, he thought of it as being too, I don't know the word, generous, perhaps. Within one year she totalled his Lexus, and within 3 years she totalled her moms Yukon.
We learned our lesson the hard way after our daughter totalled our 28,000 mile diesel VW. After that, she got a low cost used car and we got a car. From then on we thought of the kids car not as a "nice thing" for them to have but as protection against our better cars.
