It is true that some things are less radioactive vs others, some have very short half lives (time it takes 1/2 of the radioactive material to change to a less radioactive element.)

Some stuff is very radioactive in that is sends out it's radiation very fast damaging everything around it. Others while very dangerous have LONG half lives.

The other issue is that EVERYTHING USED inside the radiation zone is treated as if it is as toxic as the main radioactive element. So suits tools water etc are all treated as if it is total toxic waste. That builds up the volume of storage materials needed.

You brought up bananas in post #566. Not sure of your point but bananas are on the list in the reference. If you care to look back, nearly all of my posts are references to the different topics. Not sure what my level of understanding has to do with it. Why not find some references to support your presented opinions?

There seems to be widespread concern over nuclear waste as is demonstrated by our inability to even agree on where to put a long tie storage facility and how to safely store it. It seems that there are relatively safe methods for handling the different materials but long range storage and cross country transportation raise many concerns.

Don't bother fearmongering us with an industry that are not involved with. You don't know about. You don't under stand. And you take as gospel the words of the green peace cranks that are against everything. When I see stats published by the anti's. the numbers and stats are just plain slanted, wrong and out right lies.
A fuel bundle after 250yrs has the same dose as a cat scan.

It isn't the speed. It's the energy . Gamma, beta and Alpha all travel at the speed on light . Do do have different abilities to penetrate mass. A peice of paper will stop alpha. They also vary in electron volts.Neutrons travel much slower than the speed of light. Water or oil is a better shield for neutrons.

Accusations of fear mongering are a weak responce to posted references. Attack or counter the information in the referenced sites. I live 30 miles down wind from 2 nuclear plants. I have a right to feel it involves me. The very temporary onsite storage of spent fuel is already well past the original plan and it appears it may continue for decades. There are issues with cost and long range plan for the material.

2000s
January芳ebruary 2000: Samut Prakan radiation accident: three deaths and ten injuries resulted in Samut Prakarn when a cobalt-60 radiation-therapy unit was dismantled.[16]
May 2000: Meet Halfa, Egypt; two fatalities due to radiography accident.[59]
August 2000 March 2001: Instituto Oncologico Nacional of Panama, 17 fatalities. Patients receiving treatment for prostate cancer and cancer of the cervix receive lethal doses of radiation.[11][61]
August 9, 2004: Mihama Nuclear Power Plant accident, 4 fatalities. Hot water and steam leaked from a broken pipe (not actually a radiation accident).[62]
9 May 2005: it was announced that Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant in the UK suffered a large leak of a highly radioactive solution, which first started in July 2004.[63]
April 2010: Mayapuri radiological accident, India, one fatality after a cobalt-60 research irradiator was sold to a scrap metal dealer and dismantled.[16]
2010s
March 2011: Fukushima I nuclear accidents, Japan and the radioactive discharge at the Fukushima Daiichi Power Station.[64]
January 17, 2014: At the Rossing Uranium Mine, Nambia, a catastrophic structural failure of a leach tank resulted in a major spill.[65] The France-based laboratory, CRIIAD, reported elevated levels of radioactive materials in the area surrounding the mine.[66][67] Workers were not informed of the dangers of working with radioactive materials and the health effects thereof.[68][69][70]
February 1, 2014: Designed to last tens thousand years, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) site had its first leak of airborne radioactive materials.[71][72] 140 employees working underground at the time were sheltered indoors. 13 of these tested positive for internal radioactive contamination. Internal exposure to radioactive isotopes is more serious than external exposure, as these particles lodge in the body for decades, irradiating the surrounding tissues, thus increasing the risk of future cancers and other health effects. A second leak at the plant occurred shortly after the first, releasing plutonium and other radiotoxins, causing concern for communities living near the repository.[73]

I have to say, i misread your last sentence to read 'the same dose as cat scat', I thought you were referring to kitty litter as the culprit.

Story in today's news is the SF Bay Area has the highest concentration of Electric vehicles in the nation... guess this is why I see so many?

Also noted local governments are now buying Nissan Leafs...

3rd world countries don't handle radioactive materials any safer than they do any other toxic compound.
You still haven't solved the problem of what really causes health problems in society. Namely toxic compound that do not degrade over time. Remember lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, asbestos etc . If you are concerned about health effects, go after those .
I can see eight nuclear reactors from my farm, beats you.
I've read through the so called reports that the anti nuclear alarmist publish. There are for the most part conjecture and exaggeration. You don't know enough about the topic to see the lies and errors.
Ever read an article about farming in a city newspaper? There is an appalling lack of accuracy there as well.
Ever wonder why you bought downwind of two nuclear plants? Sounds like those people who purchase a home near an existing airport. Then launch an excessive noise lawsuit against the airport.
