I agree with your perspective of hunting being a way to experience nature. Yesterday while turkey hunting I had a cardinal land about a foot away and sing for a couple of minutes as well as many other birds nearby. Had a box turtle crawl up to me and stretch our his neck trying to figure me out.

Listening to a hen about 5 yards away purring and clucking so softly you'd never hear it from 25 yards was a treat. But ole tom was too sly - never came closer than about 45 yards and I was holding out for a closer shot.

I've only been turkey hunting a couple times and enjoyed it back when I lived in CA. I shot a nice tom on my third time out and it was real exciting seeing them work the decoy and respond to the calls. The meat was amazing. There are no turkeys where I'm at now, but the Game Biologist told me they are working on reintroducing them to the area. The closest area they are doing this is about ten miles away, so maybe one day there will be turkeys here again.
