Oh yes, I did tons of research (trust me, I was UNBLEEPINGHAPPY)
I went to the DMV, they pissed me off (DMV's are the same the world over)
I called department of revenue (who does this), I got sent around a couple places, finally got the deputy chief of the state police of port of entry and HE understood it (and when he didn't know, he said so and gave me other names to call)

Basically, if you are using it commercially NOT on your own property, you owe.

Total bleeping crap.

Nobody has ever heard of it, 2 tractor dealers had not a clue. The DMV barely knew how to do it (finally had to have the supervisor do it and I was there for like 3 hours) and I've never seen a plate or a sticker.

I even had to fax in proof of the registration on my warning to the mobile unit state police and I added a real nice cover sheet saying "ummm, nobody knows about this, and it's outrageously expensive, go ahead and enforce it on everyone" (if everyone gets enforced and everyone's lawn goes up $10/week, then it will get changed, not until)

The county extension agent didn't know (my wife volunteers for them and they have advertisements for people willing to bush hog for $30/hour. )

I have no idea how old it is, I know it was "changed" in 09/07 but I bet it's older than that.

Often when things like that are "changed" it means that the law was on the books for 30 years but never enforced once, now they decided to enforce it. We had that happen about 3-4 years ago with our use tax (= sales tax on stuff you buy mail order from out of state) when they put the use tax return on the same state income tax return that everyone must file and you have to sign, instead of the prior separate return that no person ever filed or probably even read (it was literally the bottom corner of the tax instruction booklet's back cover).

How interesting...you got snagged by a go-getter. Youre tax $$ hard at work. :)

Just one more question (for now)...how do they define 'your own property'? Is it truly about deeded ownership or road use? Will they be able to snag folks who rent/lease land or farmers who own noncontiguous parcels and must use the roads to get from one to another?

jinman -- No worries...I think theyll let you in. :D :D :D Aw, too bad there isnt a smiley w/o teeth! :D

Iff'ns ya have too many teeth or not enough, jes don't wear no shoes. That'll equal things out.

My wife HATES it when I make fun of our home state! She absolutely looses her ever lovin' mind when I wear bibs with no shirt, forget the shoes, and walk around with a blade of straw hangin' outta the mouth. And I personally find that SO attractive! ;)

LC I think you are a lot like me, I don't mind paying the taxes fees etc. I just wish like heck others who are doing the same as me had to do the same that I was.

We got cited years ago for no tags on a trailer by a local cop who just so happened to run a lawn care business as well...........

Hmmmmm, his trailers were not tagged either. :(

That is the stuff that get's me fuming.

The zoneing board and I go around about similar stuff pretty regularly as well.

sad.

don't worry, I'm sure colorado will repeal theirs to match others (bahhahahahahhahaha not)

One thing we do have in Conn is a personal property tax that you have to fill out a form for each October. It appears to never be audited and you can claim an exemption for $500 of hand tools and $100,000 if you are a legit farm ($15,000 in annual revenues.) Registered vehicles are not included in this tax, they are taxed by the town at it's property mill rate. The only item I pay tax on is a bright orange 44,000 lb Hitachi Excavator and that is only because the Tax Assessor who I know well asked me what the large orange machine on my farm was. My first year tax was $140 with penality and now it is $70 / year. I do not claim any of my 40' containers, etc.

Hay Brian, here in Montana the SM sticker(snowmobile sticker) is only 5 dollars. only thing is you can't get it until you show proof of property tax paid. they haven't said anything about the tractor but a friend with a Kubota utv or whatever they call them was pushing snow off sidewalks and got nailed. crossing the street to the next sidewalk.
I got nailed last fall with my fertilizer applicator for no dot number. since it has the possibility to be over 26,000 pds it's required. this is a sm plated vehicle of husbandry. Got the state agri business involved. sol now i'm dot'd and waiting for my safety audit and drug testing program. Me thinks it' not gonna get any better. Something is gonna happen the way nationwide they are pushing dot numbers, can't figure it out yet but i bet we won't like it when it happens Ron
