It is a privilege not a right to drive. Check points are very much legal and if you think they are intrusive then you have the right not to drive.

If that makes you feel better about it, then keep thinking that way. Just take note that most of the citizens you deal with while doing this, DO NOT feel that way.
Why in the world would you think its not my right to use public lands, whether it be a park, a roadway, a sidwalk or parking lot, for its intended purpose. The intended purpose of a public roadway is to drive on it, the purpose of a sidewalk is to walk on it and so forth. As a tax payer and free citizen, it IS my right to do so. Dont use that "right vs privilage" crap as an excuse to detain, question and visually search me, it just doesnt fly. Now if Im doing something that raises suspicion, thats another issue. Do you need a reason to stop someone, weaving, lights out, no belt, etc. Or can you just pick someone and pull them over for no reason?
My guess is if you randomly picked 20 people one day and pulled them over and asked a bunch of questions for no reason, and they complained, you would be standing in front of someones desk the next day trying to come up with a valid reason for stopping them, am I right.

The hand held machines are reasonably accurate but are not acceptable as evidence (other than as probable cause) because they do no produce a record. It would come down to "he said/she said" as to what the reading was on the roadside. The BAC machine itself is very accurate assuming that all maintenance is up to date on it.

LMTC is correct. If citizens of the USA think something is wrong then we can and should say that we think so. If we do not it will not change. "right not to drive" is very disresptful to those of us who just don't agree with this practice of "check points".

It wont change anything because you have organizations with cute little acronyms that are trying to do good but in doing so, sometimes go too far. Politicians get a big pat on the back for supporting them and the police get federal and state money to spend on easy overtime to man check points. I mean what politician is his/her right mind would go on record as opposing M.A.D.D.?
Read this, check point myths, if you really want to fire this thread up. MADD Online: Sobriety Checkpoints: Facts & Myths I especially like this quote "Opponents of sobriety checkpoints tend to be those who drink and drive frequently and are concerned about being caught". HOG WASH!

These 'organizations with cute little acronyms' were started by a small group of people (one person?) who wanted to change the laws and they did. People who don't like sobriety checkpoints could learn from them, assuming they really want to change things and not just complain.

A lot of the campaigns programs etc or what ever you want to call them are joint efforts by insurance compaines and police departments for the purpose of generating extra revenue for both .

We could all be T.O.A.D.S.

Complaining is the first step. Most things dont get past this step because that takes some level of organization.

Exactly how do these 'campaigns' generate revenue for insurance companies?

And if you're referring to sobriety checkpoints (your post isn't clear about exactly what 'campagns' you're referring to), more often than not, they're funded by the federal (or state) government, who pays for the overtime for the police.
