Well, Mike what do you think? The ideas are on both sides and both have good arguments.

Dane

Dane it's not what I think, I count for just one. It's what the majority thinks.

If a sobriety check point is going to keep just one more from drinking before they get behind the wheel, then I'm all for it.

Everyone should have an opinion here, that is if you operate a motor vehicle.

This is a tricky one, but I'll see if I can share my views. I think that checkpoints are a blatant infringement on my rights, and I am against them. I also feel that speed limits and drunk driving laws are blatant infringements on my rights and I am against them.

If I drive 100 mph down a deserted road at 1 am and make it home safely, who is harmed? Whose rights have been violated? Where is the crime?

If I drive home at 1 am with a .12 BAC and make it home safely without hitting anybody or running off the road, who is harmed? Whose rights have been violated? Where is the crime?

"But," all the good citizens say, "you are so much more likely to be in an accident if you are speeding or drinking."

Well, I didn't, did I?

How can you punish someone for what they MIGHT have done? Ridiculous.

Punish crimes, not potential crimes.

You wanna drive 150 mph in your new porsche on the way home? Fine, do it, just don't hit anyone. You wanna drink 12 beers and drive 6 blocks home, fine, do it, just don't hit anyone.

No wreck, no crime here Shawn? The bars should pile the drunks in the cars and send em home after they close? I'm glad that isn't the way it works in most states.

No, people should be responsible and find a way home other than driving home drunk so that they DON'T commit a crime by running off the road and hitting someone's house or run into another car. Once that happens, they have committed a crime and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

There's millions of drivers out there over 65 that have greatly reduced reaction times. Should we have checkpoints to get them off the road?

What about someone who's been up for 24 hours working a double shift at a factory? They're more likely to cause a wreck than a fully rested driver? Should we have awareness checkpoints to jail them?

I'm sure I'm not the first person to break out laughing when reading this post.

I understand you're being facetious and that's okay.

his post is funny but also true: what constutes a crime? thinking about robbing a bank and running to mexico with millions of buck to live life lavising on the beach? is that a crime because I figured robbing a bank was the way to get the $? but yet I didn't do anything wrong YET, I DIDN'T commit a crime YET, but I do belive that DUI is a crime in-itesl self as you are impaired but also there is a point where at any age drivers are impaired, 16 yr olds as well as 80 yr olds both think slowly ;)

anyhow I HATE check point, here in OHIO where Mike lives, they are required to post/advertize that next week on friday night we are having a check point at so & so location for X hours. so any body with 1/2 a brain can avoid them, and to be sure this info is made know at the local bars too.

anyhow I vote for less laws more common sense fewer cops and even fewer lawers! (probably some of the biggest criminals on the streets) seems to me the cops/lawers create laws that keep them in buisness making money from the people, not for the people & by the people as we were so commonly taught way back in school. but isn't that the point of government anylonger?

ok off my anti tirade and probably onto the anti-terriorest watch list: (SORRY BIG BROTHER I THOUGHT I WAS STILL FREE)

signed a former military person whom is disabled fighting for our freedome which they decided we no longer need.

As a former cop, I've been accused of a lot of things, but this is the first time I ever heard that we created laws.:D Yes, police agencies do establish procedures and policies, but those have to be approved by higher civilian authority; i.e., state or federal legislators, county commissioners, city councils, etc.

And incidentally, the police operate now under a lot more restrictions than they did when I started in law enforcement, and of course you also have a lot more crime now, too, as one of the results.

There has to be a balance between individual freedoms and laws/rules/regulations that protect us from each other. And I think I can guarantee that no balance will ever be found that pleases everyone.

Revenue from Red Light Cameras.

The first 5 day figures are in.

Could this be right?

About $100 million a year!

In Houston Texas (my old stomping ground) they installed 10 red light cameras. At ONE intersection, IN 5 DAYS, it caught 700 violators. 70 were dismissed mostly because the cars were taking a right on red after a "rolling" stop and they were debatable.
That leaves 630 X $75 = $47,250.00 - one intersection 5 days.
They are thinking about installing 40 more.
So if we figure an average of $40,000. per week X 50 intersections X 52 weeks = WOW!
