This is a tricky one, but I'll see if I can share my views. I think that checkpoints are a blatant infringement on my rights, and I am against them. I also feel that speed limits and drunk driving laws are blatant infringements on my rights and I am against them.
If I drive 100 mph down a deserted road at 1 am and make it home safely, who is harmed? Whose rights have been violated? Where is the crime?
If I drive home at 1 am with a .12 BAC and make it home safely without hitting anybody or running off the road, who is harmed? Whose rights have been violated? Where is the crime?
"But," all the good citizens say, "you are so much more likely to be in an accident if you are speeding or drinking."
Well, I didn't, did I?
How can you punish someone for what they MIGHT have done? Ridiculous.
Punish crimes, not potential crimes.
You wanna drive 150 mph in your new porsche on the way home? Fine, do it, just don't hit anyone. You wanna drink 12 beers and drive 6 blocks home, fine, do it, just don't hit anyone.
