Revenue from Red Light Cameras.

The first 5 day figures are in.

Could this be right?

About $40 million a year!

In Houston Texas (my old stomping ground) they installed 10 red light cameras. At ONE intersection, IN 5 DAYS, it caught 700 violators. 70 were dismissed mostly because the cars were taking a right on red after a "rolling" stop and they were debatable.
That leaves 630 X $75 = $47,250.00 - one intersection 5 days.
They are thinking about installing 10 more.
So if we figure an average of $40,000. per week X 20 intersections X 52 weeks = WOW!

Now that's a true sin tax!

You sin.

You pay.

Less taxes for us non sinners to have to pay.

Gotta luv it!

Actually, us non-sinners will still have to pay. This just gives the politicians another pot of money to spend.

I would suggest not only cameras at intersections..... but cameras capturing video along ALL public roadways, parking lots, and even sidewalks. Why stop at only catching people making rolling stops? Shouldn't we be prosecuting all the law breakers who spit on public sidewalks, jaywalk, park at a meter that expired thirty seconds ago, etc. ??? Think of the revenue then !!!!!

The people that complain about this sort of stuff are the ones that get caught :)

Dream on!

But, in my opinion, there are only two really important questions:

(1) Were the drivers guilty, and
(2) Will the red light cameras and fines reduce the number and/or severity of accidents?

Of course, while the amount of money collected was apparently quite large, if the desired result is obtained; i.e., fewer people running the red light, then the amount of revenue will decrease in the future. And that's the whole point of installing the cameras, isn't it?

I'd say the answer to 1 and 2 are a yes but the last part about being the whole point is highly debatable.

That is correct Bird, and that is ALL us law abiding, tax paying, citizens should expect.
However, if I was a Police officer I would expect new recruits and a raise.:)

I'm still on the fence about red light cameras. They don't have discretion now this can be good or it can be bad but I think its bad. :D I have to drive through an area that has heavy road and buildng construction for years. And it will be continuing for years. One very busy intersection had the lights go red one morning. That blasted thing would not turn after 15 minutes. The only choice was to run the light. If there had been a camera at the intersection there would have been thousands of citations. If an officer had been there he/she would have been directing traffic and solving the problem.

I don't like it that companies are making money off of the cameras. I don't care if the state makes money for the most part. Law enforcement is a state responsiblity. In NC there are company police but they don't make money by writing citations.

I have read statistics that red light camera's DO NOT lower accident rate at intersections. I kinda sorta find this hard to believe and will let time pass to see more information.

Sitt'n on a fence watching what happens.

Later,
Dan

One last thing on cameras.

No here but back in oz the contractor kept well over 50% of the ticketed value.

Big bro is on the move.

Now here in the US on toll roads they are calculating the time it should take a car to get fom a to b, if you are faster you get a ticket sent to you, once again not against the driver but the oner of the car.

No proof, automaticaly assumed guitly, this is not good.
