Software (Act) question

I bought 3 copies of Act 2004 so we could share a database between several of us. This is my first exposure to Act, so I'm a bit ignorant of how this program (and databases in general) work.

Here's my dilema... I've FINALLY figured out how to restructure and rename the default page so my data download will merge properly.

I installed the second program on another pc and when we run the file (located on my pc), the data is there, but the format of the screen is wayyyyy different than what I've done.

Seems to me, there is probably a keystroke we need to do, or a file we might need to copy, to make all the users see the same page layout?

If so, what do I need to do?

I've used ACT since version 1.0. Unfortunately, I only use it on my "server", and use my laptop to acquire and use the data stored on my "server". I've never tried to copy the database to another computer. ACT's customer support was much better before Symantec bought them. You can still try to call them. Maybe they can help. I had to look, I'm using version 6.0 right now. What version are you using?

I think it's version 6 too. It's not the newest version, it's last years version. They told me for what I described my needs, I didn't need the newest version & I might save some $$ by buying last years (which I did).

Anyways, we're not really trying to copy any database to another computer, we just want the networked computers to use the same single database, and as it's turning out, we want them to "SEE" the database in the same format.

The data seems to be there in general. The second pc seems to be using the default Act format, rather than using the changed version I've made to better utilize our information.

Wow, when I simply installed ACT on my laptop and directed it to the database on the server, it pulled up that database along with all of the custom fields I have in that database. I've changed nearly every field to suit my business needs. Something sounds wrong since mine pulled up all of my custom fields automatically. Just dawned on me, when you did yours, was it a mapped drive?

Right now, I think this is only a shared folder.

I don't know if mapping it makes any difference, but if it could make a difference, I thought I'd toss that out.

Richard If I understand correctly the problem is the view and how it is formated on one PC and the view on another PC look different. This has nothing to do with the shared Database file but the viewing preference of the Act on each individual PC Sort of like all the different ways you can view TBN. And that is a user preference and not a machine or data file preference. So if that makes some since try to work with the view/format options. I don't have act so I can not guide you through the prompts. Also if you log in to Act on the PC with the wrong view as the user with the correct view this may lead you to a solution. Good Luck
