I recently installed a solar panel on my dump trailer battery. It has really solved my dead battery issues however recently one of the wires gets hot and starts smoking. The wire that smokes runs into the bottom of the onboard battery charger. The battery charger is never plugged in now given the solar panel is charging all the time. Do I need to remove the battery charger? Here are some pictures and a link to the solar panel I got. Any advice would be appreciated! Currently I am just disconnecting the solar panel until I am needing to dump then I plug it in and let it charge a few hours. This has been working but not ideal.

a 7.5w panel is not going to charge literally anything. i'd be surprised if it can even float a full battery.

it sounds more like you have a short, potentially unrelated to the solar panel

One about that size is what I use to keep the 2 batteries (1050 CCA each) on my John Deere charged because it doesn't get used very often. Started it up Friday, fired right up. Hasn't been started in almost a year. I didn't want too big of a solar charger that would cause it to overcharge.

This was kind of my thought too. I use it only a couple times a month

yea maybe a float, he's not charging a battery off .6ma it would take multiple days, and solar barely ever puts out half of what rated, and there is not even a controller in use here.

using any kind of solar panel without a controller is good way to fry something.

well, let me back pedal a touch.

based on a 80% efficiency (high for solar)

if you removed 25Ah, maybe half of a normal battery

considering 0 loss, your looking at 50 hours to recharge.

solar typical only good for about 4-6 hours.

thats about 13 days at 4 hour

little over 8 days at 6 hours per day.
