Frank, yes they are supposed to be some of the fastest to date. 2-3 feet per year almost guaranteed. Loblollies are fast by nature, and they keep making them better and better. It took me a year, but I finally got them, free from the State. After planting all 1300 of them, I dont ever want to plant another pine tree again.. EVER!!

Typhoon, if you ever get a chance, you should take aerial photos. It's fun to do that about every 5 to 10 years and watch the change in your progress. It looks like you have a very nice place with a mix of clear, timbered, and slopes that will be a beautiful homesite. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I'm curious about one thing. I noticed you put your driveway right beside the power poles. Also your rows of loblolly pines look close to the power poles. I'm just curious if there is a connection?

Jinman, yeah... the power poles are my west property line. I planted the pines far enough east so that they will never interefere with the lines. The driveway also goes down the property line edge so that it doesnt interfere too much with the farming. I have taken many aerial photos... I am not flying for a living like I thought I would be, because I met my wife right after flight school, and flying professionally leads to travelling everywhere and never being home. But I fly quite often for fun. I always make low passes over my property and the neighbors come outside if they are home and wave at me... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Talk at ya later!

I hope you don't have a deer problem -- they will eat the tops of those pines in a heartbeat. Will you have any fencing?

Have you had experience with log houses and will you be doing it yourself?

Nice looking land. Dirt looks real good.

I'm not a pilot, but I'm surrounded with them on a daily basis. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Last Saturday afternoon a coworker who has a 1947 Champ took me up and we shot photos of my place and several others around it. A neighbor of mine told me he wanted to get pictures before all the leaves got out on the trees. He hoped to be able to see the trails he has built. The trip worked out well and was a blast flying in that little Champ.

My question about the power lines was primarily because I wondered about the power company easement. Do they mind having a road on their easement? I don't know why that surprised me, but that was my first thought. If they don't mind, that will probably be a good place for a road because you can't do much else with land under power lines. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Also, are those fast-growing pines the ones they call "Super Trees"? There are lots of those planted in East Texas.
