The thing to do if you know that hitting the deer is an inevitable fact is to lie across the seat as soon as you can do so safely... it is the kicking that deer do to try to get off of the car that causes the injuries and death.....

( If you can't drive a bigger vehicle.. wasn't there a discussion about those deer siren/repellars? (not sure of the name) that attach to the bumper of your car/truck? )

They are called deer whistles..... from everything that I have learned about them, they are not effective in any way except to relieve you of some $$. It is one of those "feel good" devices, but nothing more....

"Worry is like a fast get away on a rocking horse"

Someone just shared this with me. I thought it was cute. Maybe I'll try to adopt this as my motto. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: somethin\'s been worryin\' me

When I lived in Austraila they have Bull Bars on the front of their cars. Much heaver then brush gards here. There is an Austrailian supplier now selling in the us called ARB. They have bull bars in the stores. Take a look at one. They are designed to push the animal out and down so they have much less chance of coming in the window.

I don't know if you have ever looked at a picture of a roadtrain or not, bt they will kill an animal or other vehicle.

My dad taught me "just do not swerve in any cercumstance, then you get a dead animal and a dead person." I live by that, not that I want to kill anything, but I do not want to die yet either.

Re: somethin\'s been worryin\' me

CIndi Im off Tpic here but I had a neighbor that dorve a big 78 grand Marque and he had told dad that some friends of his trophy hunt but gavce the meat away. Dad said he'd take a few. Well laterthat week mom woke me up at 3 AM and Dad was at the door with his pistol. He was sayin who is it. He said it was Steve your neighbor hes ai I brought you a deer but your gonna have to kill it first. Dad told me what in the hell has he be drinking. Dad openedthe door and there stood Steve comming home from his second shift job at the Cat reman plant. The porck light showed fuzz all around him. It turns out he had come home on the 4 lane about 70mph and deer ran out in front of him. He hit it and it flew up. It broke his windshield and he thought it had gne over. then he looked over and the passenger seat flew was broken back. He said the wre almost happened when the deere started balling and pawing the seat. We choked the deer down with a rope then shot her. It was a 95 pound doe that could have easily killed him. .

Re: somethin\'s been worryin\' me

Cindi,

People do die in accidents with deer but it is rare. I see dead
dear all over the place this time of year. Its just carnage out
there right now.

The people are getting away ok for the most part. We did have
two accidents recently where the people where hurt or killed.

In one a car hit a deer and it came through the windshield. I
did not hear if it was a small car. But the antler hit a teenage
girl in the eye and it looks like she has lost her vision.

There was an off duty deputy that was just killed AVOIDING a
deer. I think this is the big risk myself.

Hitting a gator would not worry me unless I had a REAL small
car and a big gator. Should be like hitting a big bump....

Re: somethin\'s been worryin\' me

Cindi, I have been told by a retired KY State Policeman that more people die in accidents trying to dodge a deer than have died hitting a deer. You always hear of single vehicle accidents at night when the troopers can't give a reason for the accident. But they believe deer are involved. Deer usually stick to a patern. If you see them crossing the road at a certain place one night then slow down and be alert at that section every night.

Re: somethin\'s been worryin\' me

Many times you have no chance to react as the deer jump in front of the vehicle.

If you do see a deer always expect several more to be following.

They can cause considerable damage to a vehicle. $4000.00 Canadian to my daughters car a few years ago. On p/u's many of the custom added grill guards do not provide adaquate protection from a deer collision.

I was almost hit by a deer while riding my bicycle to work one morning. Crossed road about ten feet in front of me. It was dark out and the bicycle headlamp doesn't give much side illumination.

Re: somethin\'s been worryin\' me

Not to give another thing to worry about, but then there is the angle where instead of you hitting the deer, IT hits YOU.

I was driving out to work one day (near home), a bunch of deer jumped in front of me on the road, so where there is one, I know there is another and I hit the brakes. I was at essentially a dead stop, or crawling speed, another out of the woods, then another... all prancing across the road in front of me...then

WHUMPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

Seems even the deer population has their not-so-brights. The last deer hit my car squarely just in front of the passenger door. Right at the hinge line. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Left a clean spot too /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif now I had to wash the rest of my car. (I drive a Miata so I ALWAYS slow down if I suspect any solid objects in front of me)

Re: somethin\'s been worryin\' me

Another thing dad taught me was dont honk the horn if a dear is crossin in front of you or running beside the car. If crossing you here a white tail will turn right into you if you honk. I did nt think dad was right but ive tried it severeal times in my old dump truck. The hunters here wont take a doe out and they have over populated here. My neighbor killed 87 deere this spring and summer. They get in his garden plush he paid a few thousand on his truck for a new front cap. They still are over running. 3 or 4 times this year they have run into a larger town in the next county and run into plate glass windows in crowded restaurants.
