If the crack was repaired in the past and isn't leaking now, then it may just be cosmetic at this point.

it is leaking that's how I found it, it looks like it is coming from behind the weld on the top side of the weld. I am curious to know if they drilled the ends of the crack before they welded it.

I doubt if this tractor will ever work hard again for more than an hour at a time. Just grind the weld and area down a bit where it's leaking and spread the ground area with JB-Weld. Use a really coarse grind stone so that the JB has something to grab on to. Once the JB has hardened a bit, lightly press a shop cloth into the JB and pull it off. When you paint it it will look just like cast iron and will easily hold in the water leak. Some leak sealer in the antifreeze will probably do the same thing. I wouldn't worry about the cracked block.

Cast iron is more brittle than steel and has a bad habit of small cracks spreading- so drilling the end of a crack reduces the chance it will continue to spread.

UPDATE: got the old tractor running today and that was the only good news. found out the hydraulics are not working, in first gear it has a knocking sound and it has a cracked block right where the newer version has a freeze plug. it does not make the knocking noise in any other gear so it probably has a chipped tooth. the three point hitch does not even try to move.

Control valve is probably stuck so the 3 point won't work. Open the right side plate and reach into the oil and find a "T" shaped valve stem attached to the "H" shaped control fork. Make sure the ends of the "T" are in the Sockets at the end of the "H" control fork and move the valve forward and backward about an inch. Now start it up and move the lift lever up and down. The "H" shaped control fork should move the control valve "T" fore and aft as you move the lift lever up and down and the three point hitch should respond by going up and down.UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU STICK YOUR HAND IN THE HYDRAULIC COMPARTMENT WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING!

If the fluid is milky it's got condensed water in it and should be replaced.

I felt insulted today, I found a guy that works on tractors and he offered me 200. dollars for the old Ford 9N

Yeah, that may be a little low. But don't take it as an insult. I would hate to see it (or any old tractor) scrapped.
For me to put a price on yours, around SE Oklahoma it would be around 400 or so because of the cracked block and hydraulics not working yet. Yes even that stings a bit I admit. But that's where I see them.

9Ns can typically go for around 2000 in nice shape. The perfect restos, or V8/V6 Funk conversioons and Sherman auxilary transmissions fetch higher of course.

Your hydraulics (may) be bad. For me to rebuild my 47 2n, the parts cost me 325. a rebuilt pump seemed to be around 500 if I remember right.
That cracked block could be as much as 500 in order to replace it with one that is guaranteed to be good. My rebuild doing it myself including getting the crank turned which you prob won't need was nearly 1000 in parts.
Tires used are hard to find. Expect 100 bucks plus apiece used on those rears.

Sadly, they are not worth a whole lot. They were geared to high for a lot of farming activities and without position control and live hydraulics, there are a lot better tractors with more bang for the buck.

Don't get me wrong. I keep throwing a bit more money in mine whenever it needs something else as I would hate to sell it for what my offer would be. I't's so beatup and ugly it would never make the 2000 dollar mark to sell. Even after what I've done, I'd be lucky to get 1000-1500 I honestly believe.

So I keep it.

Thanks that does make me feel a little better and I was only hoping for 500 anyway
