>>I think the most important feature on the digital Camcorders
is the USB or Firewire port on them. <<

I'd sure agree with that .... my Sharp is an "original" as in before USB and Firewire became endemic.
I like the way it works ... but I had no way (other than copying to VHS/Beta) to do anything with the tapes. So ... I found a fantasic deal on a Samsung dv camcorder last month and snapped it up ... just to be able to get Firewire connectivity. I now have 10 hours of dv stored on the external HD's (I found a great deal on those too .... now have over half a terabyte available ... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif )

yeah, I always had a problem with those standards ... so I solved it by getting both .... I will admit I haven't opened the beta camera case for a decade .... and I don't think I've unpacked any of the beta recorders since I moved here .... ain't technology grand.

I also went with the GST when I got the L3710 ... just to be contrary ... but now I have a hydrostatic garden tractor and have an RTV in my (near) future ...

I'm not that smart. I looked at those Sony digitals that had the tape with them and just scratched my head. It didn't make no sense to me. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

DVD is not a distribution format and the video is stored in MPEG. As such, editing is not going to provide satifactory results.

DVI (the wee digital tapes) is a distribution format and is used extensively in professional equipment. While the video is stored compressed, it does not use MPEG and is an editable format.

If you want to shoot video and play it without editing, DVD cameras are fine. On the other hand, advanced (and no so advanced) amateurs stick with DVI. Not so nifty as DVD (although the cameras can be much smaller) but the way to go.

Wow - thanks all for the info. Now I'm going to need my 15 year old Grandson to digest some of this information for me and go from there. He crashed grandpa's computer a few years back, along with his mother's, father's and other relatives, but now when anyone in the family needs advice/help, he's our "Go to Guy". Amazing what these young people can do if you let them. When I was that age they wouldn't let you touch much more then a leaf rake and shovel.
