54 Ah = $499 with FREE shipping?
100 AH = $899 with FREE shipping?
Not for me!

Not for me...

So going back to basics, what is the max recommended CCA for the GC tractors especially in winters of Maine? I know the higher you go the less the charging system can keep up and you end up with a charge deficit. That in turn wreaks havoc on the alternator and battery.

I have given up on trying to find the best. I pick the appropriate size of the middle quality (Silver?) at the most convenient auto parts store and be done with it. I expect to replace them in 3-4 years or at the first sign of trouble. Less stressful that way and they swap them out. I understand that there are only 3-4 US battery manufacturers but likely build them to retailers specs.

Batteries of the same size may differ in construction for higher CCA. The thinner plates are less resistant to vibration, and potential damage. Basic 51R with 450CCA works ok. Just changed mine out after 8 years (OEM lasted 7). Never had a tender, or charger hooked up to it.

I like the AGM batteries,
no corrosion on the terminals.
They are expensive but may be worth it to some.
Especially those that need or want the no spill feature of them.

Also as far as getting to "big" of a battery and having the battery out run the charging system,
that's a new one to me.
As far as I know the only way to get a charge deficit is to use more energy then your system can put in and that will not care what size the battery is.
We have had 900 cca batteries in a IH 560 with a 20 amp generator.

Don't see that either.... Only thing may be charger is to small to do timely charge, but if there is less drain on battery then charge can provide, it will "eventually" charge battery....

Batteries plus group 51 has served me well in my 2009 gc-2400 and group 31 in my Massey 175
