I got two from the local car wash. They were plastic, but plastic would be my preference for diesel also.

Depends if the polyethylene is suitable for storing petroleum based fluids.

55 Gal steel drums are free for the taking around here. Then again the
construction of such seems to be 'cost reduced' compared to the drums
I've scrounged over a decade ago. The current drums are so lightweight
they are considered disposable and aren't recycled.

When i was working i used to buy and use a lot of water treatment chemicals, for use in Boilers, cooling towers etc. i used to get them in 15, 30 and 55 gal. depnding on the amt used.check with some of the business in your area, these make excellent fuel storage units(in most cases) just know that many of the chemicals are toxic and the residue in them needs to be handeled carefully and disposed of proprely. wash them out and let them drain, then set them in the sun to evaporate and moisture in them. water in fuel is not good /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sorry I didin't see this thread until now! Soft drink bottling plants get their syprups in 30 and 55 gallon poly drums- nice, heavy containers. Around here, they were $3 and $5 respectively, and they are in demand, so you call first. Great for rain collection! I have 7 in use, at pretty much each downspout on the outbuildings. No rain for 3 weeks- no problem! No rain for 3 months- problem.
