Snow Equipment Owning/Operating Speed of my snowblower increased.

My tractor not only has 540 and 1000 but picked up a 750 RPM also and now they only have one shaft. Remember when the larger tractors had a 1000 RPM shaft but it was splined different so you couldnt hook up 540 equipment to it. Now it seems tractor manufacturers think owners are smart enough to select the proper gear for the equipment they are using so they dont need to have different shafts.

The tractors that have 540 and 1000 pto options require different pto ends. On the larger Farmall's you unbolt the rear pto (3 bolts if I recall) and when the plate is off the 540 pto comes out and you can insert the 1000 pto. The 1000 pto implements have a different shaft (21 spline I think) and that hasn't changed.

Both of my Kub Ls have a single 6 spline stub that you can run at 540 or 1000. I have modified the reversible PTO stub on the 7520 so I can run the 6 spline at 1000 if I need to.

I beg to differ.
My Mitsubishi MT180D (USA and not grey) has 3 speed PTO and only the standard six spline PTO shaft (and it is the standard rotation as well).
A lever on the left side of my tractor selects 540-N-750-N-1000 (at specific engine RPM's)
Grey Mitsu's often rotated reverse but could be modified.

Do you have any of the 1000 pto implements? Have you ever seen any 1000 pto implements in North America that will work on a 18 horse tractor with 6 spline pto? I'm not saying tractors don't have the option and I'm not sure what implements they have in Asia but in north America 1000 pto implements have different ptos to prevent using the wrong speed range with the implement. These implements are usually used on 100 hp tractors and larger.

True ... 100HP at 540 would be huge torque. Very hard on a PTO shaft. Still, multispeed 6spline is real value added on smaller tractors, and this has been increasingly lost because too many small tractor buyers havnt the experience to push the mfg. ... In this thread we are talking a hi cost auxiliary gearbox cobbed onto a setup to achieve the clean ability afforded by a $100 design option in a mass produced tractor. :confused3:

One thing I would worry about is destroying gearboxes on implements if run at 1000 when their only designed for 540. I understand the advantages of reduced throttle and sadly do not have any small tractors with 1000 pto option to know why or how they were designed in regards to the pto itself but I would not expect implement manufacturers to spend money to design their products to hold up to twice the rated speed and I've never seen a pto implement for under 50 horse tractors designed for 1000, everything is 540.

I do know a 540 pto stub is not as strong as a 1000 pto stub and I believe there are two sizes of 1000 stubs because of how high the horse power has climbed on the big tractors. It is easy to break a 540 stub running at 1000.

Well, if youre talking the 1-3/8" dia that "easier breakage" would be on the high HP tractor I guess. Torque is rufly half at the 1000 rpm giving a benefit to either stub. The 21 spline is marginally stronger owing to slightly more root metal and better control of the stress risers inherent in the teeth. It also guides the yoke attachment better. These things add up. ... And yes theres a bigger fine spline format. Anybody know the size?
....I wouldnt run 540 at 1000 unless maybe a pump. Most other things I would cut engine rpm to get about 650 to 750 output. 540,750,1000 PTO would be real handy!

I think it is 1¾" as far as the larger 1000.

What am I missing here, nowhere is it mentioned a fuel budget and no where is the tractor size mentioned so how can you know he doesnt have continuous torque available. Just a question as I see a couple of edits but nowhere is the tractor mentioned or the fuel cost.
I am not into snow blowers but $1000 seems like a lot to upgrade one. Before spending that kind of money I think I would try to sell the one I have and buy a new more powerful one if needed.

Read between the lines. I wasn't going to spell every little point out on the wee little screen of an iphone.
