Good of you to give the "good side" to the neighbors. The plywood and shingles look great.....now I have to "review" my "choice" of metal roofing. Of my theoretical barn, of course.
Any movement of the poles over the Winter? Probably not, but just thought I'd ask. Other than the one that moved sideways, of course. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Question, why would you not sheet both sides prior to putting shingles on? Is there an advantage?

knucklehead, No there was no detectable movement of the poles other than that one.

pajoube, Trying to sheet both sides and get them shingled would have been biting off more than I can chew. I knew that ahead of time and I didn't even consider trying it. I spent Thursday and Friday night, all day Saturday and Sunday, and finished up on Monday just to get the one side done. I have to be careful about the amount of time I spend on this project. If I spend too much time on it then I may end up having to sleep out there.

This quote from my last post says it all. I had to give the wife a break. She works full time and when she gets home from work I had been asking her to do more than her share of taking care of our beautiful daughter so I could go out and "play". I really neglected the yard last summer due to the pole barn project so I spent quite a bit of time on getting that in better shape this spring. I also took a couple of my free days and went dirt bike riding. I am working on getting electric to the barn. Everything out here in the woods is underground and the transformer is 375 feet away from where my panel will be located in the barn. I spent a lot of time negotiating with the local electical supplier to let me do what I want. They wanted to charge me two grand to trench over from the transformer, put the underground wire in the trench, and place the meter on the building. I wanted to have the meter located near the transformer and do the trenching and such myself. I wanted a central distribution point with one meter at the transformer so when I add more buildings to the property I don't have to pay them to come out again (and I don't have multiple meters all over the place). I will just be able to tap into my central distribution point and go from there. I've convinced them to let me do that. I have the electrical permit, I'm just waiting for MissDig (underground utility locating service) to come out and flag my property again. They will be coming out next Friday to meet with me. I have to go out of town again next Tuesday through Thursday or they would have come sooner.
Thanks for the interest. I will be sure to post when I make some more progress. At least I am not working backwards like I was this winter when I busted that pole /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif (Now I've done it, I probably shouldn't have said that).

I've really enjoyed these posts as well. I too have to do everthing myself (with the exception of my tractor helper of course). I plan to built a similar project so keep the posts and pictures coming. Thanks.

As I was saying in my post dated 5/23/03 I have been focusing on getting electric out to the new pole barn. I figured if I start on the electric in the spring I may have it done by winter /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. In the previous post I think I mentioned that all the utilities out here in the woods are buried underground so I need to keep the new power lines underground as well. Some of you have tapped into the power from your house and fed your outbuildings that way. I have attached a diagram showing why that is not even an option for me. In the diagram you can see my existing power lines feeding my house. They actually don't run straight like that but you get the point. The electric company tells me that those lines are 453 feet long and are 350mcm aluminum lines. According to all the charts I have seen that is really pushing it if you want a 200 amp service. I do have a 200 amp panel in my house but there is a 125 amp breaker on the outside of the house right after the meter. I think they might have put that on there because they new they were pushing it with the 350mcm aluminum at a length of 453 feet. It is another 250 feet from the house down to the pole barn. There is just no way I could tap into the house to feed the barn with all of these circumstances. So, as stated earlier the electric company wanted $2000 to trench the 375 feet from the transformer to the barn, supply and bury the 350mcm aluminum cable, and mount a meter on my barn. I think I can do it cheaper and make it easier for myself in the future if I want additional buildinds on the property.
