Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Another milestone has been passed. I installed the metal siding on one wall last week. I started out with the shortest wall for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that the shortest pieces of metal were stacked on top of the pile. I also wanted to practice on the easy stuff first.

So here is a picture of the side of my lean-to where my helpful TC-33D resides.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

One more picture to share this morning.

I installed a 36" by 80" entry door on the barn yesterday. This is the first entry door that I have ever installed so I am quite pleased with how it turned out. It is perfectly plumb and level and secured with 3 1/2" screws. I will probably go out and purchase a lockset for it today. Not that locking the door will do any good at this point, I just want to be able to use the door without it swinging around in the wind.

After the entry door was installed the barn really started to look more complete.

Spencer,

It looks great. There is a certain satisfaction that you get when the small pieces of a big project fit together.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

OK, I am tired now. I just got done reading all the pages. I think I am getting ready to build a 30x30 with a 12' lean closer to the house for stuff that does not need to be in my shop. You have done a nice job with yours.
I can bet you little girl knows were daddy is all the time. I saw the swing set buy the shop. That is a good baby sitter I will bet.
Keep up the good work.
I have 4000' foot under roof in my shop + a large 2 car on the house now I need more. I now know you will fill up what ever you have.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

On your entry door installation, did you follow the manufacturer's instructions and put a bunch of silicone under the threshold. My contractor did not and water is constantly coming under the door with every rain storm or snow melt. I installed the same type door in another building and followed the directions and have not had any rain or melted snow enter from under the door.
You are doing a beautiful job.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Wow. I came across TBN just a few weeks ago and across this "thread" (can you call it that? Perhaps more of a spool? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif). You have done an absolutely amazing job. I will be starting a building in the spring and am feeling a bit overwhelmed now that I see your quest. Nobody can appreciate your work as much as you, but sharing here sure has to help. What an amazing place TBN is. I learned more than I care to admit reading what you have done. Thank you for the education and best of luck to you (not that that had anything to do with it).

Heh. That's funny, it paints an interesting mental picture.

Yes, Spencer has done some amazing things. Plus the thread is chock full of ideas that I have used/will use in the future.

As an aside, you can check out Eddie Walker's and Wroughtn_Harv's posts as well. Along with Spence, these three guys are heavy hitters to be sure. Lots of good ideas.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

I'll do that - thanks for the heads-up! I'm looking forward /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif to building a new home constructed with ICF's and possibly SIP's as well as an outbuilding this spring. Additional options being considered include hydronic radiant heated floors and a ground source heat pump. Like Spencer, I travel quite a bit (although I think he mentioned that that will be slowing down for him now - I'm jealous). The SIP appeal is ease and speed of exterior construction plus a increased ease of DIY. I have never built a structure before, but have gotten my hands dirty plenty installing new electrical sub panels, receptacles, lighting systems, doors, windows, and floors, etc. over a few houses over the years. It will be interesting for sure.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Spencer,
I think the sidewalk around the barn is really nice, it give the building a real "finished" look.

Also it will make one heck of a good raceway for tricycles and big wheels.

Beautiful project, forward and onward with the Quest...
