Maybe it's just me but I have spilled more fuel using the new spill proof nozzles than I ever did before with the plain old pouring spouts. A definite case of over engineering gone rampant. On one type of fuel spout I have to push a safety on the nozzle and a lever at the same time. What's next? Maybe closing my right eye and while at the same time holding my left hing leg lifted 24" in the air?

I have to underfill the container to minimize the spills. Instead of filling to the rated capacity (say 6 gallons) i have to fill about a gallon less. I bought a new 1.25 gallon container for trimmer and chainsaw pre-mix, made a mess everytime I used it. Bought a 2 gallon one, mix only 1 gallon in it and not near the mess.

As you say, rather irritating.

They suck. End of story.

Seriously, trying to #1 figure them out. Then #2 do whatever convoluted system they have to 'not spill' is horrible. And the ones without any vents are even worse, because it just splashes around all over the place.

The new system SUCKS!!!! So take the new system and make some adjustments and they work fine.:2cents:

i did the tire Valve mod and can report it works great and makes the can work like old ones...even a little better
Drill a hole, add tire valve, remove core done

As the old military saying goes these cans are a CF. The idea was to limit pollution, but it has increased it. The new cans leak, don't pour with a darn and general are worthless! I have a few 6 gallon cans I bought for diesel fuel a few years ago and they were great, but I can't buy the original replacement spouts now and the new ones are terrible. The tire valve vent works although I use a piece of rubber fuel line and an off/on valve which also works fine.

I heard the whole reason behind these cans is that it keeps fumes from the gas from escaping into the atmosphere, but what's the first item on the warning label? "Open valve to release pressure." Kind of defeats the whole purpose of these cans! Besides you wouldn't want a pressurized gas can shooting fuel all over your hot engine as you fill it up. lol This is an example of mindless people dictating regulations on things they have no experience with.

Every time I use one I lose some fuel on the side of whatever I'm filling & on the ground.
Makes me stop, scratch my head, and wonder "How can this be?!?"
I may just give the tire valve trick a try - can't be any worse than what I have.
Definitely a product of the Charlie Foxtrot committee.

that was designed by a committee. - Allan Sherman

It's the law of of unintended consequence of government action. Whatever is intended, the opposite eventually occurs. Think about it.

Oh--find an old can and take good care of it. Also, you can now buy old style nozzles that fit other cans as well.

This is what I use=no spill what so ever, but, a little pricy.

Great idea, thanks !!

I drove a 12-penny galvanized nail in each container where the vent used to be put. With hammering it in you have a snug fit, although not spill proof, and it holds the nail well. I also gut the nozzle and it pours great. Just pull the nail, take off cap and pour. No cost!

Don't work well for me as well, Always spill a little when fueling the saw from my 2 gallon jug. Hard to see the level in the saw tank. I like the flex hose with valve that I use for diesel, but again the cheap plastic hose does not last very long.

I just unscrew the cap and use a funnel to fill the tank. It works great on a tractor, and I have a smaller funnel that works OK for lawn mowers. Most recently I bought a new style that just has a push button like a water cooler that works pretty good.

I haven't found a safety feature that can't be defeated. If I can't figure it out, some else has and posted it on the net. I haven't done the schrader valve thing yet, but plan to. Also I think I'm going to get a high performance fuel pump and use it to pump gas from the can to tank.

I just use two old metal WWll five gallon jerry cans. Simple and work just fine. The design makes them fit in the floor of the car just right.

Get an EZ-pour kit, may not be available in your state:

UNIVERSAL GAS SPOUT ォ EZ-POUR

Thanks for letting us know about these spouts. Just got a couple in myself and couldn't be happier with them. Oh, I would also suggest getting the Hi-Flo ones as they come with extensions, which make the spout about 18 inches or so in length. Works great for filling up the tank on my 'bota with as high as it is on the hood.
