I never moved out or into California, just always been here. Between my 7 sisters and 2 brothers, theyve been spread around many states with everyone living in California again except one up in Washington State. My brother Pete lived in Bloomfield Hills Michigan working for Ameritech back in the early 90's.

This is what they use in the outdoor wood boilers. They spray this under the outside trim. These boilers heat up to over 180 degrees so they must hold up well under heat.

Check out Nu-Wool Wallseal® Cellulose Insulation. We are going to use this instead of Icynene because of cost and sound dampening. It is alot cheaper but also makes an air-tight house just like the sprayed in foam. It is worth checking out if you want good insulation.

Rat:

Bloomfield Hills....It's about suicide driving from here to there and dealing with Michigan drivers and the bad roads.

My oil got delivered today. It's a pretty orange and smells vastly different from the SUDT. I'm going on your recommendation now. At least I'll be able to see it on the dipstick without squinting. You were right, it's priced right between UDT and SUDT.

i think all cellulose will keep the air from moving inside the walls?

Chris,

You mentioned Nu-Wool as being cheaper than Icynene .... got any numbers on that as an example ? I have an email into one of their local contractors but so far no response.

I'm getting closer to being ready to have the walls in our new polebarn done and I'm trying to decide which way to go.

If you use this foam, be sure to put in some conduint where you think you may want electric, phone, cable, or anything in the wall BEFORE you apply it. It would be nearly impossible to install something, say an electrical outlet, in the wall after the fact. I would suggest at least one maybe 2 pipes in each wall cavity. 1" PVC is cheap for this.

Danny,

Thanks - good point.

I don't think I'll have a problem - I'm installing outlets every 4' on all the walls and alternating between single duplex and double duplex installations so I imagine I will be covered as far as 120v goes .... 220/240 could be another matter though. Some of that (welder, plasma, air compressor) I will do before the walls are done.

The plan is to screw-on OSB for the wall covering - so it would be fairly easy to remove. I have 7" of depth in the cavities from the inside edge of the poles/studs to the sheetmetal on the outside which should be plenty of space - I could probably not even fill the cavities up all the way and I'd still be in good shape as far as insulation goes. Even if I did, I think it wouldn't be too hard to use a router to cut a channel to pass a wire through ......

Although I'd certainly prefer to handle it all before insulation and the walls go up, I'm realistic enough to know that there's always something that will come up later on.

I like your 'being realistic' approach.

I'll add a" 2 cents". to the discussion!

Consider furring strips placed 16" centers (real cheap) horozontly prior to screwing the OSB.
That way you can always fish any wires as you'd have that 3/4" space available.
Also the added 'dead air space' is actually another R2 maybe R3.
